Russell Marcus, the Truax Postdoctoral Fellow of Philosophy, presented an interactive workshop and the annual Waldman Lecture on May 16, at Temples Emanu-El and Beth El in Utica.

Jeffrey Immelt P’10, chairman and CEO of General Electric (GE), will deliver the Commencement address at Hamilton College on Sunday, May 23, at 10:30 a.m., in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Hamilton will award bachelor's degrees to 498 seniors.

Online fundraising is no longer unique to colleges, but online fundraising auctions are. For the second year, Hamilton is partnering with an online auction house, charitybuzz, in a three-week event that features opportunities to bid on a range of unique experiences as well as tangible items. Funds raised will go to scholarships for New York City public school graduates who are planning to attend Hamilton.

Students in the New York Program visited The New York Philharmonic to enjoy Igor Stravinsky's Symphonies of Wind Instruments and The Firebird on April 21. The performances were directed by the famous Russian director, Valerie Gergiev. Prior to the performances the group had dinner at Gabriel's Restaurant.

An essay by Associate Professor of History Kevin Grant has been re-published in German. The essay, “Die Menschenrechte und die staatliche Abschaffung der Sklaverei, 1885-1956,” appears in Stefan-Ludwig Hoffman (ed.), Moralpolitik: Geschichte der Menschenrechte im 20. Jahrhundert (Göttingen: Wallstein Verlag, 2010). The original essay, “Human Rights and Sovereign Abolitions of Slavery, 1885-1956,” was published in 2007 in Beyond Sovereignty, a collection co-edited by Grant.

Joyce M. Barry, scholar-in residence, published a book review in the 2010 spring edition of West Virginia History: A Journal of Regional Studies. Barry reviewed the book Something’s Rising: Appalachians Fighting Mountaintop Removal by Silas House and Jason Howard, (University of Kentucky Press, 2009).

The winners of the Beverly S. and Eugene M. Tobin Employee Awards were announced at Hamilton's annual employee service recognition luncheon on May 17 at Soper Commons. Virginia Dosch, student fellowships coordinator; Joe Plado-Costante, campus safety officer; and Ron Whitford, carpenter; were honored. President Joan Hinde Stewart presented the awards following the recognition of employees who had achieved 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service to the College.

The Richard W. Couper Press has issued a new publication, Visiting the Shakers, 1850-1899: Watervliet, Hancock, Tyringham, New Lebanon, edited by Glendyne R. Wergland. This is a companion to her earlier volume published by the Couper Press in 2007, which covered 1788-1849. Visitors to Shaker communities recorded impressions of Shaker life, material culture, and worship. These 85 accounts provide a valuable window into Shaker life.

On April 20 the students in the New York Program had dinner and spent the evening with Kwame Anthony Appiah, the Laurence S. Rockefeller University Professor in the Department of Philosophy and the University Center for Human Values at Princeton University.

Sue Ann Miller, professor of biology, gave a paper at the annual meeting of the American Association of Anatomists held with the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology [FASEB] April 24-28 in Anaheim, Calif. Her presentation was titled "Exercises to encourage analytical skills and enrich understanding in a pre-baccalaureate anatomy course.”
