Hamilton College is commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. Day with events this week and next.  Today, employees are volunteering at three non-profit organizations in the Utica area.  Employees were released from regular duties so they could work on group projects at Johnson Park Center, Upstate Cerebral Palsy and the Rescue Mission.

Forty-eight members of the class of ’16 as well as six transfer students arrived on the Hill on Jan. 17 to register, move in and matriculate at Hamilton.  The College offers January admission to about 35-45 students per year to fill vacancies created by students on leave and studying abroad.

Twenty Hamilton students returned to campus on Jan. 13 to participate in the second Levitt Leadership Institute (LLI) which continues through Jan. 18.  The program was designed and is led by Ambassador Prudence Bushnell with the assistance of Christine Powers and is intended to provide strong leadership training for students.  The LLI was made possible by the generous financial support of Arthur Levitt, Jr. P'81, and the Norman and Rosita Winston Foundation.

Professor of English and Creative Writing Doran Larson was an invited speaker and panelist at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Conference on Accompaniment and the Criminal Justice System in Chicago, Jan. 2-4.

Two poems by Marty Cain ’13 were accepted by [PANK] Magazine and are slated to appear in the March 2013 online issue, including audio recordings of Cain reading the poems. The magazine will also be publishing an interview with Cain on its website.

A new building and events at Hamilton drew much interest from local media during 2012. The opening of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art and the all-alumni celebration of Hamilton’s bicentennial garnered significant attention, and faculty members offered expertise on timely news topics throughout the year.

Co-ed a capella group Duelly Noted is preparing for its third annual concert tour over Hamilton’s winter break.   The four-day tour will include performances in New York State, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.

Alex Thompson ’13, who interned at biotechnology company Genentech in San Francisco last summer, coauthored a paper in The Journal of Organic Chemistry as a result of his research.  The paper, “The Cyanide Anion as a Leaving Group in Nucleophilic Aromatic Substitution: Synthesis of Quaternary Centers at Azine Heterocycles,” was co-authored with his supervisor, research associate Malcolm Huestis. Thompson worked as an intern in the Small Molecule Drug Discovery Department.

The Hamilton College Arboretum Association will present a series of free workshops in January through May on the Hamilton campus. These events are open to the public and sponsored by the College and its Arboretum Association. All will take place from 10 a.m.  to noon in the Kennedy Auditorium, Taylor Science Center (GO27), unless otherwise noted.  Pre-registration is requested by calling (315) 859-4657.
