A work by Ben Salzman '14 and Professor of Music Samuel Pellman, Selected Galaxies: Peculiar, was recently presented on a concert at the Understanding Visual Music 2013 conference, hosted by the Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero, in Buenos Aires.

Professor of French John C. O'Neal presented a paper at the conference “Consuming Passions: Economies of Desire in French Literature and Arts, 1100-1815,” held at Washington University, Oct. 3-5.

More than 1800 family members and friends are expected on the Hill for Hamilton's Family Weekend, taking place on campus from Oct. 31- Nov. 3. A wide variety of events aimed at educating and entertaining are planned for the weekend.

The Hamilton College Departments of Music and Dance and Movement Studies will offer a full schedule of free performances in Wellin Hall during the College’s Family Weekend, Friday, Nov. 1, and Saturday, Nov. 2, in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts.

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Max Majireck presented his postdoctoral research at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Northeastern Regional Meeting (NERM) on Oct. 25.

Stanford University Professor Richard Zare delivered the James S. Plant Distinguished Scientist Lecture to an eager audience in the Chapel on Oct. 29. Established in 1988 by Hamilton alumnus James Plant, the series was created to bring to the campus outstanding scientists and guest lecturers. Zare was no exception.

Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, was interviewed for an American Public Media Marketplace feature on inflation, broadcast on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Hamilton alumnus Luvuyo Mandela ’09 returned to the Hill on Oct. 29 to speak about his work as a social entrepreneur in South Africa. His former philosophy professor, A. Todd Franklin, introduced Mandela and thanked him for agreeing to speak to the small gathering, heavily composed of students in Franklin’s “Philosophy of Race, Gender and Culture” course.

As artist Arlene Shechet explains, “Part of the process (of making art) is seeing art and talking about art.” Hamilton’s senior art majors had the opportunity to do just that on Oct. 25-27, taking a break from their own studios to go to New York City to visit five practicing artists.

On Oct. 23, the Hamilton College Program in Washington students had the privilege of meeting with Representative Richard Hanna. He represents New York’s 22nd district, which includes Hamilton College.
