Sixteen members of Hamilton’s Black Latin Student Union (BLSU) attended the 19th annual Black Solidarity Conference, held at Yale University on Feb. 13 to 16. This year’s topic was “Rooted: The Odyssey of Black Art,” which explored the diversity of art mediums in their presentation of black culture and in their propagation and/or prevention of racism and stereotyping of the black community.

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology, was interviewed for an article in The Why Files: The Science Behind the News, a weekly online news source. In “Menace to Monarchs,” Williams discussed monarch butterflies’ migration to Mexico where they spend the winter in select mountaintop areas.

Upson Chair for Public Discourse and Professor of Geosciences Barbara Tewksbury gave the keynote address at the 32nd National Symposium and 1st International Geoscience Congress on Feb. 18. The event was in Tehran, Iran, and because Tewksbury was unable to be there, “University-Level Geoscience Education for the 21st Century,” was presented via video.

Patricia Pogue Couper, Hamilton friend, benefactor and widow of alumnus Richard W. Couper ’44, died Monday evening at her home. She was 90.

Imagine that you need to ask for directions in Madrid, but those three years of high school Spanish didn’t leave a lasting impression. Fear not, because for quick phrases on-the-go, it just takes a Smigin. Smigin is a new mobile translating app that allows users to build phrases and instantly receive accurate translations by selecting sentence fragments from three drop-down boxes.  The app went live in the Apple® app store on Monday, Feb. 17.

Ivan Gaskell, professor of cultural history and museum studies at the Bard Graduate Center, New York City, will discuss the display of objects in museum spaces in a lecture on Thursday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m., in the Overlook in the Wellin Museum. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Tracy Adler, director of the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, moderated an ArtTable panel discussion on “The Art and Science of Museum Engagement” on Feb. 14 in Chicago. The event was part of the College Art Association’s (CAA) annual conference.

Four Hamilton students traveled to Albany, N.Y., on Feb. 12 to take part in Student Advocacy Day.  Hosted annually by CICU, this event makes it possible for legislators to hear directly from students on what Opportunity Programs across New York State mean in their lives. Hamilton students who attended were LaShawn Ware ’17, Morolake Thompson ’14, Osvaldo Adames ’15, and Leslie Campos ’15.

In publishing circles, “essential” isn’t a word to be tossed around lightly. Although every academic book advances our understanding of its subject in some way, there are not many books that are so vital to a field that scholars can’t work without them. 

Hamilton College will host the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, a collection of short films about mountain sports and culture, on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 7 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium in the Kirner-Johnson Building.
