Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, gave one of two presentations on “Research Priorities” at the opening session of the Mid-Year Fellows workshop at Rutgers University.

Lolita Buckner Inniss, the Elihu Root Peace Fund Visiting Professor of Women’s Studies, was awarded a grant for the completion of her book The Princeton Fugitive Slave: James Collins Johnson.

Hamilton College President Joan Hinde Stewart attended an all-day summit on Thursday, Jan. 16, hosted by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama in Washington.  Note: Following this meeting, President Stewart discussed her observations on Albany public radio station WAMC-FM  and Utica station WIBX-AM.

The Hamilton College Town-Gown Fund made $60,000 in grants to six organizations last week, bringing the total disbursed from the endowment to $505,175.

Professor of History Thomas Wilson spoke about Confucian philosophy has influenced modern Chinese cuisine and how “…Confucius has become a brand in a sense," in an article in the Chicago Tribune. In “Philosophy influenced Chinese cuisine,” published on Jan. 10, Wilson summarized the trend.  "It's marketable, and Confucius is the friendly face of civility that kind of replaces the scary face of Mao in past days."

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons spent a week at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute developing code for the computer algebra system Macaulay 2. 

The national media highlighted Hamilton College in multiple ways throughout 2013, focusing on faculty research and expertise, featuring opinion pieces and announcing new endeavors and special student projects. From The New York Times to NPR’s All Things Considered to The Today Show, the college was visible in media across the country.

Katie Jickling ’15 was awarded  “Best Rookie Reporter” by the Vermont Press Association for her reporting work at the weekly newspaper, The Herald of Randolph, Vt.

Twenty-five Hamilton students returned to campus 10 days before the spring semester begins to participate in the third Levitt Leadership Institute (LLI).  The program was designed and is led by Ambassador Prudence Bushnell with the assistance of Christine Powers and is intended to provide  leadership training for students. The LLI was made possible by the financial support of Arthur Levitt, Jr. P '81, and the Norman and Rosita Winston Foundation.

Hamilton’s curling team is back in action with 20 members competing this season under captain Meghan Doherty '14 and president Trevor Howe ’14. The team’s season began in October and will continue until March.
