Professor of Comparative Literature Nancy Sorkin Rabinowitz published an article titled “The Expansion of Tragedy as Critique” in Classics in the Modern World: A Democratic Turn?

On Dec.17, Hamilton Research Librarians Laura Festine and Kristin Strohmeyer spent the day at the Clinton Central School speaking to four sections of 11th grade English about critical thinking skills, plagiarism and college research expectations.

Construction on Hamilton’s new theatre and studio arts building continues at a rapid pace, with interior work well underway and finish work taking place in some areas.

On Dec.12, the Hamilton College Program in Washington D.C. students attended their farewell dinner hosted by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack ’72, and Kirkland alumnae Christie Vilsack K’72 and Barbara Stein K’72.  Tom Vilsack is  former Governor of Iowa. Christie Vilsack is senior advisor for international education at USAID, and Barbara Stein is director of strategic partnerships for the Partnership for 21st Century Skills.

Derek Jones, the Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, and Associate Professor of Economics Jeff Pliskin co-authored a paper published in Advances in the Economic Analysis of Participatory & Labor-Managed Firms, 2013.

Scholar-in-Residence David W. Rivera presented two series of lectures from Nov. 22 to Dec. 3 in Moscow. The invited lectures focused on findings of ongoing research he is conducting with Associate Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, recently presented lectures in Moscow and Vienna.

Ten Hamilton students have received grants from the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. The 2013 recipients are Zoe Bodzas ’16, Michael Burchesky ’17, Samuel Finkelstein ’14 , Nicholas Geisler ’14, Deanna Perez ’14, Alison Ritacco’14, William Sinton ’15, Sean Henry-Smith ’15, Mackenzie Theobald ’14 and Sam Wagner ’14.

Professor of Dance Elaine Heekin collaborated with Richard Lloyd, lecturer in dance and movement studies, to create Wordplay, which was shown Dec. 4 on the Colgate campus. The project was the result of a vocal workshop Lloyd offered to Colgate students.

Ann Owen, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics, was interviewed for an American Public Media Marketplace broadcast on Tuesday, Dec. 17. The segment, “Three Risks You Didn’t Know about the Fed,” focused on some lesser-known risks of the Federal Reserve tapering off its bond purchases known as quantitative easing (QE).
