Professor of English Emerita Patricia O'Neill presented her work on "Poetry and Computers" at the National Humanities Center in June. The week-long institute gathered scholars from the United States and Europe to review projects and methodologies in digital humanities

Patricia O'Neill,  the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of Literature & Creative Writing, presented a paper titled "Poetry and Computers: Making and Meaning" at the Society for Textual Studies conference in Ottawa, Canada, on April 15. Her talk included presentation of an interactive poetry generator that encourages writers and students to write ghazals.

Students in Hamilton's NYC program went to the United Nations on  Jan. 28 for a general tour. International relations concentrator Dimitru Kaigorodov ’16 contacted his former Hamilton professor Calin Trenkov-Wermuth ’00 who now works at the UN's Department of Peacekeeping Operations. Trenkov-Wermuth met the group and answered questions about his work there.

Several members of the Hamilton community presented during the Bucknell Digital Scholarship Conference. The inaugural conference, held Nov. 14-16 at Bucknell University, focused on “Collaborating Digitally: Engaging Students in Faculty Research.”

Hamilton’s project to digitally archive video-taped readings, personal documents, letters and manuscripts of the celebrated Kashmiri-American poet Agha Shahid Ali (1949-2001) was featured in The Kashmir Reader.

An article by Edmund A. LeFevre Professor of English Patricia O’Neill on Bollywood titled “Imagining Global India: Bollywood’s Transnational Appeal,” has just been published by Continuum: A Journal of Media and Cultural Studies (Vol 27. No. 2).

Several members of Hamilton’s Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi) gave invited presentations as part of a day-long event in the exploration of Digital Humanities at DePauw University on May 29.

Janet Simons and Angel Nieves, co-directors of the Digital Humanities Initiative at Hamilton, and Hena Ahmad and Patricia O'Neill, professors of English at Truman University and Hamilton College respectively, attended the 10th annual Summer Institute in Digital Humanities at the University of Victoria in British Columbia June 4-11. More than 100 librarians, faculty and graduate students attended this year's institute representing an impressive array of scholarly work in digital humanities.

A dinner and reading by author Colum McCann was the culminating event for students in this semester’s Program in New York City.  The event was part of the Eat, Drink & Be Literary series sponsored by the Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM). The Hamilton students’ attendance was underwritten by Arthur Levitt  P’81, HD ’81, Brooklyn native and BAM enthusiast, and Bill Lynch ’82, vice president for development at BAM.

Hamilton’s spring 2011 Program in New York is delving into the topic “Mediascapes: Globalization and Culture.” Under the direction of Professor of English Patricia O’Neill, the 14 students will focus on how film, art, literature and music produce and represent global culture in New York City.
