  • Sol M. Linowitz Visiting Professor of International Affairs Robin Quinville was joined by Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Relations Alan Cafruny and Professor of Government Sharon Rivera to discuss the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

  • In a time when the politics of the Kremlin have once again captured America’s attention, Hamilton College was fortunate to host Vladimir Kara-Murza, the vice-chairman of Open Russia, an NGO advocating for democracy and human rights in Russia. He visited to screen his documentary film Nemtsov, about the political life of Boris Nemtsov, an opposition leader who championed democracy until his murder in 2015.

  • Andrej Krickovic, assistant professor in the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, Russia, and a former colleague of Hamilton Professor Alan Cafruny, visited Hamilton on May 3 to present a lecture titled “Russia, the United States and the War in Ukraine.” The event, sponsored by the Government Department, was well attended by Hamilton community members.

  • Students in the Hamilton College Program in Washington, D.C., recently met with program officers at the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) for a discussion of the organization’s efforts to promote human rights and democratic change in the post-communist region. The endowment is “a U.S. initiative to strengthen democratic institutions throughout the world through private, non-governmental efforts” that “embodies a broad, bipartisan U.S. commitment to democracy.”

  • Students in Associate Professor of Government Sharon Rivera’s “Introduction to Russian Studies” class (RSNST 100) participated in a teleconference with students from MGIMO University (the Moscow State Institute of International Affairs) on Nov. 15.  MGIMO is one of the most prestigious universities in the Russian Federation and enrolls over 6,000 students with international interests. 

  • Russian and Soviet government expert Timothy J. Colton delivered a talk on Nov. 4 on leadership in post-Soviet nations. The lecture was titled “Political Leadership after Communism” and sponsored by the Levitt Center Speaker Series. Colton is the Morris and Anna Feldberg Professor of Government and Russian Studies and chair of the Government Department at Harvard University, and the author of numerous books on Russian and Soviet politics.

  • On October 26, the students of Associate Professor of Government Sharon Rivera’s “Politics of Russia” class participated in a teleconference with students from the Moscow State Institute of International Affairs (MGIMO), which is one of the most prestigious universities in the Russian Federation. The focus of the teleconference was the state of contemporary politics in Russia and in the United States.
