The Chronicle of Higher Education in its Teaching Newsletter highlighted Hamilton’s math department in an article titled “Welcoming Students to Your Discipline - A Culture of Collaboration.”

Members of Hamilton’s faculty have been called upon repeatedly in the last few months within and beyond the campus to offer their expertise and insight on a variety of issues related to the upcoming election.

Hamilton College’s highest awards for teaching were presented to four faculty members during the annual Class & Charter Day ceremony on May 9.

Fourteen Hamilton math students presented talks at the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Seaway Section Meeting at SUNY Geneseo on April 16. Richard Bedient, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Mathematics, traveled with the students.

Five Hamilton students presented talks at the Hudson River Undergraduate Mathematics Conference (HRUMC) held April 2 at Saint Michael’s College in Burlington, Vt. They were accompanied by Richard Bedient, the William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Mathematics.

Richard Bedient, the William R. Kenan Professor of Mathematics, penned a letter to the editor that was published in The New York Times on Feb. 29 in response to an article titled A Rising Call to Promote STEM Education and Cut Liberal Arts Funding.

“Grandma Makes Granola,” an article co-authored by Professor of Mathematics Richard Bedient and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons, appeared in the January issue of The College Mathematics Journal. Also in the issue, David Richeson ’93 contributed an article titled “Proof Without Words: The Maximum Sum of Inradii.”

Professor of Mathematics Dick Bedient and Assistant Professor of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons performed with the Mobiusbandaid Players during the joint meetings of the American Mathematics Society and the Mathematics Association of America in Baltimore.

Professor of Mathematics Richard Bedient presented a talk on the Hamilton College Mathematics Senior Seminar Program at the Annual Mathematics Meetings in Boston in January.  The talk was part of a session on “Capstone Courses” and described the Hamilton seminar program as a whole, but focused on the Seminar in Topology which Bedient has taught for many years.

In the hours before a math assignment is due at Hamilton, students can be seen sitting around professors’ offices and spanning the nearby hallway. Collaboration is encouraged, and so they seek help from one another and from their professor to finish up the homework. The work is not easy, but the sense of accomplishment upon handing in each assignment is fulfilling.
