Dean of Faculty Ngoni Munemo has announced that Tina Hall, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of Literature and Creative Writing, will serve as the next associate dean of faculty.

President David Wippman recently announced the appointment of four Hamilton faculty members to endowed chairs. All will be effective July 1, 2021. Tina Hall was appointed the Christian A. Johnson Professor of Teaching Excellence; Lydia Hamessley was awarded the Eugene R. Tobin Distinguished Professorship; Doran Larson was named the Edward North Chair of Greek and Greek Literature; and Quincy Newell was appointed the Walcott-Bartlett Chair of Ethics and Christian Evidences.

The Snow Collectors, by Professor of Literature and Creative Writing Tina May Hall, was recently published by Dzanc Books.

The annual Dean’s Exceptional Service Awards and Scholarly Achievement awards were awarded to Rob Hopkins, Karen Brewer, Tina Hall, Dan Chambliss, Sall Cockburn, John McEnroe, and Xavier Tubau.

A group of creative writing senior concentrators visited New York City from Oct. 6-8 to attend The New Yorker Literary Festival. Seniors attending were Sarah Ostrow, Devon Stockmayer, Laura Whitmer and Amy Zhang. Associate Professors of Literature and Creative Writing Tina Hall and Jane Springer accompanied the students.

Associate Professor of English and Creative Writing Tina May Hall has been awarded a $25,000 National Endowment for the Arts Creative Writing Fellowship. She was one of 38 recipients chosen from a field of more than 1300 applications.

During the spring semester of her junior year, Emma Laperruque ’14 went to a place few students go: the basement kitchens of the Soper Commons Dining Hall. She was down there to complete a photography project of her own design focused on how students and the dining hall staff respectively view the space.

English and Creative Writing faculty Naomi Guttman and Tina Hall took three creative writing senior concentrators to the New Yorker Festival in New York City, Oct. 4-6. The students included Sarah Sgro, Kina Viola and Sarah Destin.

This summer, through an Emerson Foundation Grant, Sarah Sgro ’14 is studying writing that, in her words, “confronts the realities of family and romantic life through a grotesque lens.” In her project, “Family Gone Bizarre: The Domestic Grotesque in Contemporary Fiction and Poetry,” Sgro is exploring how authors approach themes of domestic life in dark and bizarre ways. She’ll then be examining those themes in her own writing.

Tina May Hall, associate professor of English and winner of the 2010 Drue Heinz Literature Prize, opened the 2010-11 Pittsburgh Contemporary Writers Series (PCWS) with a reading on Sept. 29, at the University of Pittsburgh. The PCWS presents creative writing as an intellectual endeavor, bringing notable contemporary writers of poetry, fiction and creative non-fiction to the campus.
