A crowd-pleasing performance of funky new tunes made Wellin Hall swing back in September. The Jazz Kick Off Concert took place on Sept. 11.

Inspired to create an all-Hamilton album, musician Anthony Reyes ’20 obtained an Emerson grant from the College to spend the summer collaborating on the project with jazz bassist and composer “Doc” Woods, the Leonard C. Ferguson Professor of Music.

On Saturday, Nov. 11, the Days-Massolo Center, with Monk Rowe, “Doc” Woods, and The College Hill Singers, presented a variety of interpretations of “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” as part of a celebration of our collective journeys.

The Department of Music presents the Jazz Kick Off Concert on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 9 p.m., in Café Opus. “Doc” Woods and local jazz artists present Thugmanuzzahnimmeride: An Album of Ridiculous Funk, an eight-movement suite of original tunes by Woods. Guest artist Jakubu Griffin, drums, will also perform.

President Joan Hinde Stewart recently announced the appointment of eight Hamilton faculty members to endowed chairs.  Doug Ambrose (history),  Brian Collett (physics), Martine Guyot-Bender (French), Gordon Jones (physics), Tim Kelly (mathematics), Heidi Ravven (religious studies), Patrick Reynolds (biology) and Michael “Doc” Woods (music) received appointments. All are effective July 1.

Hamilton College’s Departments of Music and Literature and Creative Writing join forces to create a unique evening of poetry and music on Thursday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m., in Café Opus.
