Associate Professor of English Steven Yao published an essay, "Translation," in the volume Ezra Pound in Context, published by Cambridge University Press and edited by Ira B. Nadel. In this essay Yao traces the importance of translation as a mode of literary production within Pound's individual career, as well as within Anglo-American modernism more generally.

“Retreat of the East Antarctic ice sheet during the last glacial termination,” a paper authored by Joel W. Johnson Family Professor of Geosciences Eugene Domack along with 11 co-authors, was published on Nature Geoscience’s website on Jan. 16. The paper will appear in print in the near future. Other co-authors include Caroline Lavoie, who recently completed postdoctoral research at Hamilton.

A trio of exhibitions that feature eccentric views of men and women opens on Monday, Jan.17, in the Emerson Gallery. On view through April 3, they include paintings, drawings and photography. The exhibitions and associated events are free and open to the public.

Two papers by Assistant Professor of Economics Emily Conover, “Manipulation of Social Program Eligibility: Detection, Explanations and Consequences for Empirical Research” and “Effects of Colombia's Social Protection System on Workers' Choice between Formal and Informal Employment,” were presented at the American Economic Association meeting held Jan. 6-9, in Denver.

James S. Sherman Professor of Government Philip Klinkner and Jesse Stinebring ’13 presented a paper at the Southern Political Science Association meeting held Jan. 6-8, in New Orleans. “Black, White, and Green: Race and Campaign Spending in the 2008 Election” examines the role of race resentment in recent elections and whether Barack Obama’s campaign spending advantage impacted the outcome of the 2008 presidential election.

The Hamilton College Arboretum Association will present a free workshop on "The Return of the American Elm" on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 10 a.m., in the Kennedy Auditorium, Science Center. Pre-registration is requested by calling 315-859-4657.

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority has recognized the energy efficiency levels achieved in the Kirner-Johnson (KJ) Building with a High Performance Building plaque. A building must have an efficiency level higher than 30 percent above the building code to receive this award. Original energy savings for KJ were predicted to be 25 to 28 percent.

Heidi M. Ravven, professor of religious studies, gave a paper, "What Maimonides and Spinoza Can Teach us About Moral Psychology and Agency," at the annual joint meeting of the Society for Jewish Ethics, Society for Christian Ethics, and Society for the Study of Islamic Ethics in New Orleans, Jan. 6-9.
