Hamilton community members were transported across party lines on April 11 as Jim Messina, former Deputy Chief of Staff to President Barack Obama, and Reince Priebus, former Chief of Staff to President Donald Trump, engaged in a dialogue surrounding some of the country’s most pressing issues. The event was moderated by Jackie Judd P’14, a veteran journalist and political communications consultant.

Yance Ford ’94 has been awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. The Foundation offers Fellowships to further the development of scholars and artists by assisting them to engage in research in any field of knowledge and creation in any of the arts, under the freest possible conditions and irrespective of race, color, or creed.

Prior to their Common Ground discussion on April 11, Reince Priebus and Jim Messina held a Q&A with Hamilton students. Two government classes were selected to participate in the event. Reince Priebus previously served as chief of staff to President Trump and chair of the Republican National Committee. Jim Messina was the former deputy chief of staff and campaign manager to President Obama.

Students in Professor of Government Sharon Rivera’s introductory comparative politics class (Govt 112) participated in a mock parliamentary debate on April 3 as part of a semester-long simulation staged in the fictional country of West Europa.

On April 6, 120 student-athletes volunteered at 18 different community partners in Clinton, Rome, Utica, and Sauquoit as part of the 2nd Annual SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee)//COOP (Community Outreach and Opportunity Project) Day of Service. The initiative was part of the larger NCAA Division III Week of Service in which groups volunteered at local community partners, including the Thea Bowman House in Utica, and Special Olympics in Rome.

“Upsetting the Canon: from 1969 to 2019,” an article by Assistant Professor of Anthropology Mariam Durrani, recently appeared in Anthropology News.

After a semester in Madrid last year through Hamilton’s Academic Year in Spain, Sabrina Boutselis ’19 fell in love with Spanish culture and became fascinated with the growing emphasis on Spanish-English bilingual education. As a result, she applied for and was awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Galicia, Spain.

Peuo Tuy, an award-winning Khmer-American modern poet, told her story, “Past, Present, Future Refugee Experience in America,” to a group of students in the SHINE program classes working with Associate Professor of Russian John Bartle and Britt Hysell, director of the ESOL program, on April 5.

Assistant Professor of French Claire Mouflard recently presented the research for her upcoming manuscript titled The “Black-Blanc-Beur” Utopia: Publishing Practices and Identity Formation in Metropolitan French Women Writing (1998-2005) at Penn State University as part of the French and Francophone Studies Graduate Organization's lecture series.

The sixth annual Animal Rescue Law Forum, organized by Kevan Cleary P’12 and Tami Aisenson K’75 from New York County Lawyers Association, took place on March 14 in New York City. Each year, Hamilton students work as social media/communication interns to help promote the event.
