Ethan R. Woods '09 has been awarded the College's prestigious Bristol Fellowship. Woods' proposal is titled "A Culinary Journey: Recipes through an Economic-Historic Lens." The Bristol Fellowship was begun in 1996 as part of a gift to Hamilton College by William M. Bristol Jr., '17. Created by his family, the fellowship is designed to encourage Hamilton students to experience the richness of the world by living outside the United States for one year and studying an area of great personal interest.

In the midst of the current financial turmoil, David Backus '75, the Heinz Riehl Professor of International Economics and Finance at New York University, sat down with NYC Program students to answer their economic questions. Backus explored a wide range of topics, including Tim Geithner's plan to remove troubled assets from banks' balance sheets, the role of the dollar in international trade, the possible consequences of the stimulus plan, and whether gold makes sense as an investment.

If there is one message to be taken from recent Hamilton alumni and Career Center events it's this: the Hamilton network is stronger and busier than ever. A very recent example is the first GOLD (Graduates of the Last Decade) Summit that took place April 3-5.

Jayne Cortez and the Firespitters will perform their unique fusion of poetry, jazz and blues on Wednesday, April 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Fillius Events Barn at Hamilton. It is free and open to the public.

Hamilton's Mock Trial team recently participated in the Opening Round Championship Site tournament hosted by Lafayette College in Easton, Pa. All rounds took place at the Northampton County Courthouse in Easton. Competition participants included Larry Allen '09, Casey Green '09, Teddy McBride '10, Evan Klondar '11, Mike Nguyen '11, Antonia Farzan '11, Tyler Roberts '12, Caitlin Tuten-Rhodes '12 and Julia Goldstein '12.

Heidi Ravven, professor of religious studies, participated in a roundtable on science and religion held at Emory University on March 31-April 1. The goals of the roundtable were to think about science and religion and plan for future discussion about related emerging issues that will arouse public debate and division in the next 10-20 years.

About 150 students, faculty, staff members and alumni visited KJ Commons on April 4 to celebrate HAVOC's 20th anniversary. The Hamilton Association for Volunteering Outreach and Charity has more than 20 weekly projects at sites off and on the Hill that let students make a difference in the community. As a part of the largest student-led organization at Hamilton, HAVOC volunteers make new friends, build leadership skills, and make a difference in people's lives.

Masaaki Kamiya, assistant professor of East Asian languages and literatures, contributed a chapter, "Movement of Arguments and Negative Feature" to the book Explorations of Phase Theory: Features and Arguments, edited by Kleanthes K. Grohmann. The chapter by Kamiya investigates syntax and phonology interface.

Mike Moreno '11 won his second singles match in as many days, but visiting Hamilton College fell to nationally ranked No. 30 Tufts University, 7-2, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference contest played in Medford, Mass., on April 5.
