Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Rodriguez Plate participated in several events at the American Academy of Religion annual meeting held Nov. 1-3 in Chicago. Plate organized and presided over one panel, "Re-enchantment and Re-connection: On the Relation of Religion and Contemporary Art," and was a panelist for another session on "Religion and Media."

Professor of French John C. O'Neal recently finished his second term as president of the Northeast American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies at the annual meeting held at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, October 31-Nov 2. O'Neal had served previously as president of this society in 1992-1993. At the Geneva conference, he organized a session on ambiguity in the politics, literature, and history of the Enlightenment. He also presided over the meeting of the Executive Board and the general assembly of members during the banquet.

Gen Flanders '09 and Meredith FitzPatrick '11 delivered all-region performances as they helped Hamilton College to eighth place in the NCAA Division III Atlantic Regional at St. Lawrence University's 6,000-meter Robert C. Hoffmann Cross Country Course on Nov. 15.

Majora Carter, founder of Sustainable South Bronx, will present a lecture titled "Green the Ghetto - Why, How and What Happens if We Don't," on Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hamilton College Chapel. The lecture, which is sponsored by the Diversity and Social Justice Project, is free and open to the public.

Derek Jones, Irma M. and Robert D. Morris Professor of Economics, with Evis Sinani and Niels Mygind, has published an article in Corporate Ownership & Control (Volume 5, Issue 3, 2008). "Determinants of Firm-level Technical Efficiency: Evidence Using a Stochastic Frontier Approach" investigates the determinants and dynamics of firm efficiency using a representative sample of Estonian firms for the period 1993-1999.

Amid deafening laughter and applause, "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart performed to a capacity crowd as the 16th guest in the Sacerdote Series, Great Names at Hamilton, on Nov. 14. Stewart showed he had done his homework on Hamilton, making reference to such topics as the Hamilton-Colgate rivalry and the Spectator.

"I want to do something a little different," said photographer David Hilliard in his lecture's opening disclaimer. This was not going to be a seminar simply regarding mythology – the artist's breadth of work. Instead Hilliard was going to focus on motivation. It's easy enough to view a photo collection, he elaborated, but it's much more difficult to discern how those pieces actually came into conception.
