Colleagues in the Hamilton College chapter of Sigma Xi recognized service provided by a retiring senior member during the recent initiation dinner at commencement. Professor of Biology Sue Ann Miller has been a member of the society for 44 years since she was inducted as a graduating student having published a book and participated in scientific meetings and panels. Continuous active membership for decades has made her a sustaining member.

More than 17 percent of Utica’s population was born outside of the United States, and a drive through the city reveals numerous stores, churches and community centers built up by diverse ethnic groups. Despite the prevalence of immigrants in Utica, however, refugees face significant challenges to assimilating into the community. Understanding these challenges is the goal of a Levitt Research Group this summer. Erica Chen ’19, Audrey Nadler ’18 and Sofia Rachad ’18, with the guidance of Professor of Economics Erol Balkan, are researching the experiences of refugees in Utica.

The work of Atelier Four, a group of four printmakers with ties to Hamilton, is on display through July 24 at View Arts Center in Old Forge, N.Y.

Twenty rising sophomores are spending the summer completing career-related experiences through First-Year Forward, a program run by Hamilton’s Career and Life Outcomes Center. Their goals are to develop skills in communication, networking and interviewing, and to assess their own strengths and career interests. Internships this summer will help them to define and build toward career goals. Eddie Brennan ’19 is interning at the Fountainhead Group.

Frank Anechiarico ’71, the Maynard-Knox Professor of Government and Law, was invited to address delegates to the Third Annual Conference on Governance, Crime and Justice Statistics in Merida, Mexico, June 5-10. The meeting was sponsored by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime.

The Hamilton Women’s Soccer team embarked on an unforgettable journey to Bermuda in May. Players and coaches enjoyed getting to know the local people, the history of the island, the thriving culture and of course, the finest international competition.

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology emeritus and lecturer in biology, co-authored a letter that will be presented to the leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico when they meet for the North American Leaders’ Summit in Ottawa on June 29.

Michelle Woodward ’17 is not one to let things slide. She started a methodical search for summer internships during the fall as she was studying in Siena, Italy, and her get-it-done attitude paid off with the position she wanted.

Assistant Professor of Mathematics Courtney Gibbons attended the American Mathematical Society (AMS) Mathematics Research Communities “Algebraic Statistics” program on June 12-18 in Snowbird, Utah, where she participated in a workshop on “Likelihood Geometry.”

Over the past decade, bees have been dying and colonies collapsing in unprecedented numbers, posing a threat not only to the bees themselves, but to the many crops they pollinate. Scientists are still working to understand all the factors that pose risks to bees. This summer, Andre Burnham ’18 and Fiona McLaughlin ’19 are contributing their own research to this important question by comparing the fitness of locally raised queen bees and queen bees imported from California.
