Nearly 150 students will gather for Hamilton’s 17th annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Service Day on Saturday, Jan. 24. The community service event, run by the Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach and Charity ( HAVOC), sends students to a wide variety of non-profit organizations across the area for volunteer work.

A group of six intrepid Hamilton students took to the White Mountains of New Hampshire for a variety of winter adventures and explorations. They hiked, did some indoor rock climbing and attempted to summit Mt. Washington, from January 4-11.

Professors of Art Bruce Muirhead and William Salzillo are participating in Layers of Identity II, a special international exchange exhibition that originated in Los Angeles in August and is currently on display in Jerusalem.

With coffee cups in hand and notebooks out, 13 students met bright and early on Monday morning Jan. 12 – more than a week before classes started – to start the week-long Levitt Center Social Innovation Fellows program, led by Professor Anke Wessels, executive director of Cornell University’s Center for Transformative Action. With the help of Wessels, students were gathered to receive training and support for socially innovative projects and programs.

Five Hamilton students spent a week shadowing resident physicians at the St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica during the week of Jan 12.  Catherine Oglevee ’15, Deanna Cho ’15, Jamie McLean ’15, Ashley Carducci ’15, and John Bennett ’16 had the opportunity to experience what it means to be a medical resident.

Armed with an intricate headpiece of lion teeth, a variety of jazz instruments, and a deep-rooted passion for the growth of humanity, Syracuse Professor and self-described “word artist” Arthur Flowers serenaded the crowd in Tolles Pavilion on January 19 in homage to Martin Luther King Jr.

In an email to the Hamilton community, President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the death of Donald Brandreth Potter, professor of geology emeritus. He died on Tuesday, Jan. 20, at his home following complications from a fall.

Visiting Professor of Theater Andrew Holland designed the scenery for Opera San Antonio's premier, full-stage production of Richard Strauss' Salome. The show opened on Jan. 8 in the newly constructed Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in San Antonio, Texas.

Tickets remain for the Thursday, Jan. 22, Theatre Department performance of The Mountaintop by Katori Hall in the Barrett Theatre, Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts.  Tuesday and Wednesday's dinner performances are sold out.

When classes resume on Tuesday, Jan. 20, 39 new members of the class of 2018 and six transfer students will be among those settling in for the spring semester. The “Jans” arrived on campus on Friday and have been taking part in orientation activities.
