President Joan Hinde Stewart announced the passing of Life Trustee Fran Musselman  ’50, H’05, P’75 in an e-mail to the campus community on April 5. “I write with great sadness to inform you that Life Trustee Fran Musselman’50, H’05, P’75 died peacefully yesterday after succumbing to lung cancer. His daughters were at his side. He lived 87 full years.”

Hamilton will host “Faculty of Color in the Liberal Arts College,” a two-day conference  sponsored by the New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium, on Thursday and Friday, April 11-12.

Listening to a short clip of Milt Hinton interview legendary jazz musician Teddy Wilson more than 30 years ago feels as though one is sitting in the room with them as they discuss stories from their lives and careers. This type of easy, free-flowing conversation characterizes many of the 120 interviews conducted over the course of the National Endowment for the Arts’ Jazz Oral History Project. Dan Morgenstern, who worked on the project for its entire life from 1972-1983, presented a lecture on April 8 about the intimate relationship between jazz history and oral tradition.

Hamilton students and alumni took the opportunity to put their business ideas and proposals to the test through the annual Hamilton College Pitch Competition held during Volunteer Weekend, April 5-7.

Dave Thompson, director of the Charlean and Wayland Blood Fitness and Dance Center, director of Campus Wellness and professor of physical education at Hamilton, was honored as the 2013 Distinguished Service Award recipient by Hamilton’s Alumni Association. John Hadity ’83, president of the Alumni Association, presented the award on April 5 during the Alumni Council’s Recognition dinner.

During spring break five Hamilton students summited Mt. Washington, New England’s highest peak, as the culmination of a week-long introduction to mountaineering course. Hamilton’s Outing Club (HOC) sponsored the six-day course taught by HOC officer David Morgan ’15. The Mt. Washington ascent came after 4 days snowshoeing deep in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Government Omobolaji Olarinmoye presented a paper titled “China in Africa” to the United Nations Association of Upper Mohawk Valley on March 21 in Utica, N.Y.

Professor of Mathematics Debra Boutin published a research article titled “The Cost of 2-Distinguishing Cartesian Powers” in the Electronic Journal of Combinatorics.

Utican Helen Sperling, a Holocaust survivor and renowned lecturer, will speak at Hamilton College on Tuesday, April 9, at 7 p.m., in the Chapel. The lecture is sponsored by Hillel and is free and open to the public.

The Hamilton College F.I.L.M. (Forum on Image and Language in Motion) series will present filmmaker Su Friedrich with Gut Renovation (2012) on Sunday, April 7, at 2 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ. The event includes the screening of the film followed by a discussion. It is free and open to the public.
