Melissa Kong '08 recently had the opportunity to interview Cathie Black, president of Hearst Magazines and Hamilton's 2009 Commencement speaker. In the following article, Black describes her experiences looking for that first job and offers advice for the Class of 2009.

Hamilton students Katerina Adair '10, Katie Anderson '11, and Kenley Stark '11 visited glass artist Josh Simpson '72 at his studio in Shelburne Falls, Ma., this week. The students are working with Susanna White, the Emerson Gallery's associate director and curator, to organize an exhibition of Simpson's work.

Twenty-four members of Hamilton's class of 2009 were elected on May 21 to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest honor society. They join 24 classmates who were elected earlier this year.

Paul Peterzell '58 was honored early this month as volunteer of the year by Marin County, California. Peterzell, who has volunteered for more than a decade as a mediator in the district attorney's office, works with six other volunteers in the office to resolve disputes between consumers and businesses there. A government major while at Hamilton and member of the Squires, Peterzell went on to get a master's degree in journalism at Columbia.

The Hamilton College departments of dance and theatre, the Hartford Players Youth Theater (HPTY) and Untitled @ Large will present two theatrical community productions, I Dream a World and Hometown Heroes on Wednesday, May 20, and Thursday, May 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Blood Dance Studio in the Blood Fitness Center at Hamilton College. Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics Chiara Sulprizio presented a paper at the Classical Association of Canada annual meeting in Vancouver, Canada, held May 12 – 14. Her paper was part of the American Philological Association Outreach Panel on the theme of "Borders" titled "Xerxes' Tears: Power, Narrative and Geopolitics in Herodotus' Histories."

The winners of the Beverly S. and Eugene M. Tobin Employee Awards were announced at Hamilton's annual employee service recognition luncheon on May 18 at Soper Commons. Ray Cyr, custodian at Carnegie Residence Hall; Lisa Magnarelli '96, assistant dean of students for campus life/ director of student activities; and Kelly Walton, senior assistant to the associate dean of faculty, were honored. Acting President and Dean of Faculty Joe Urgo presented the awards following the recognition of employees who had achieved 10, 20, 30 and 40 years of service to the College.

Cathie Black, president of Hearst Magazines, will deliver the Commencement address at Hamilton College on Sunday, May 24, at 10:30 a.m. in the Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Hamilton will award degrees to 472 seniors. Black will be awarded an honorary degree, along with John Adams, co-founder of the Natural Resources Defense Council; Colgate University President Rebecca Chopp; and Stuart Scott, a 1961 graduate of Hamilton and former chairman of its Board of Trustees.

The Diversity and Social Justice Project, with matching funds from the Kirkland Endowment, announced that two students will receive funding to conduct social justice internships this summer. Recipients are Sujitha Amalanayagam '10 and Sarah Goodell '11. The students' goal is to do work that makes a significant contribution to society.

Asian Studies Postdoctoral Fellow and Visiting Assistant Professor of Comparative Literature Anna Oldfield presented at a conference titled "Totalitarian Laughter: Cultures of the Comic Under Socialism" held at Princeton University on May 15-18. Her presentation was titled "Laughter and the Anxiety of Ethnicity: The New Caucasian Woman in Kavkazskaia Plennitsa and Qayinana."
