Skiing to Win a War: Professor of History Maurice Isserman on his book, The Winter Army

Join us as Publius Virgilius Rogers Professor of American History Maurice Isserman leads a discussion of his book, The Winter Army: The World War II Odyssey of the 10th Mountain Division, America’s Elite Alpine Warriors. Professor Isserman will touch on his love of skiing and mountaineering as he explains the history of the 10th, the first specialized alpine fighting force in American history. Among the division's recruits were Hamilton alumni, the father of Tom Thompson ’73, and a young Williams College student named Donald Potter P'73, who was later a professor of geology at Hamilton and father of Jennifer Potter Hayes K’73. Fun fact: Americans can thank the 10th for the development of skiing as a recreational sport! This event is sponsored by the Hamilton-Kirkland Class of 1974 in honor of their 50th reunion but is open to all.

A Walk in the (Acadia National) Park with Peter Arturi ’75

After a career in corporate law, Peter Arturi ’75 wanted to do something different for his retirement. He found it as a summer volunteer at Acadia National Park in Maine, where he has spent the past two summers on Mount Desert Island as a guide. In this role, he helps visitors from all over the globe explore and enjoy the park, guiding them to trailheads and iconic Acadia sites and relating the history of Mount Desert Island. Peter calls the experience, “perhaps the most fulfilling experience of my own life.” Trail along as Peter takes us through his outdoor adventures. This event is sponsored by the Class of 1975 and is open to all.

Artificial intelligence is disrupting the arts and entertainment landscape and playing a central role in the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA strike. From generating stories and visuals to potentially replacing actors, AI could both enhance and hurt the industry. In this panel discussion, you will hear about the possibilities of AI from Paul Lieberstein ’89, a writer, director, producer, and actor who is known for his work on King of the Hill and The Office; Keith Stichweh ’92, vice president of production technology at SkyDance Animation; and Mark Mullett ’07, a former agent at Willliam Morris and Creative Artists Agency (CAA). The event will be moderated by John Hadity ’83, a veteran entertainment executive and producer.
