Daniel Charles Swartz

Daniel Charles Swartz '49

Dec. 15, 1927-Sep. 19, 2018

Daniel Charles Swartz ’49, a food industry executive of White Plains, N.Y., was born on Dec. 15, 1927, in Newark, N.J., a son of the former Ida Hoffman and Henry Swartz, an attorney. He graduated in 1945 from Weequahic High School in Newark.

At Hamilton, Swartz majored in history and physics. A three-sport athlete, he was a member of the basketball, football, and outdoor track and field teams when not participating with the Young Republicans Club and the Squires Club. Swartz won the Arnold Prize Scholarship, the McKinney Prize Declamation, the Darling History Prize, and was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

For his 50th reunion yearbook, Swartz remarked that “Hamilton made me what I consider a literate being and more importantly, Hamilton gave me the confidence I needed to go out there.”

After graduation, Swartz did just that. He enrolled in the R.H. Macy Co. executive training program and was eventually appointed a senior executive with the company. He subsequently switched to the food industry and became an executive with 4C Foods Corp., a New York City-based food manufacturing company, where he developed new product lines and expanded into new marketing areas. His expertise in international sales often took him abroad where he recently supervised efforts to develop organic and low-carb products.

Swartz remained in touch with his classmates and his alma mater, serving for a time as correspondent for the Class of 1949 and on the committee that planned the class’ 60th reunion. According to his son, he routinely followed Hamilton events and Continentals sports action online. He enjoyed golf and tennis and continued to work out at the gym into his 80s.

Daniel C. Swartz died on Sept. 19, 2018. He was 90 years old. College records indicate that Swartz is survived by his wife, the former Naomi Herbst, two sons, a stepson, and a stepdaughter. His step-grandson is Russell Glick ’17.
