Douglas J. Friedman '89

Jun. 12, 1967-Aug. 10, 2020

Douglas J. Friedman ’89, who was a believer in the power of athletics to boost confidence in young people, loved playing and coaching sports.

“As a coach, what made him remarkable was his belief in every kid, and ability to make sure each of them knew it. Based not on points on the board or playing time, but on showing up and making an effort,” noted a tribute to Friedman on LinkedIn.

Friedman, of San Francisco, died on Aug. 10, 2020. He was born on June 12, 1967, the son of Karen and Jack Friedman. At Hamilton, he focused his studies on public policy and political science.

Friedman spent much of his career in the pharmaceutical industry and was proud of using his leadership and collaborative skills to promote medicines that had an impact on people’s lives. Most recently he was a key account manager at Amgen and was the recipient of multiple President Club awards.

“His kindness, his smile, and his genuine care for others are the themes woven through the stories and memories so many have shared,” his family said in the LinkedIn tribute. They founded a legacy project in Friedman’s name to support coach development and reduce barriers that prevent children from participating in recreational sports.

“We were inspired by Doug’s strong belief that sports were a big factor in building his confidence as a young person. He valued the role of good coaches and became one himself. He believed every kid deserves the chance to be coached by someone who believes in them,” the family wrote.
