John Veeder Moore '62

Aug. 28, 1940-Sep. 25, 2018

John Veeder Moore ’62, an attorney of Elmira, N.Y., was born in Elmira on Aug. 28, 1940, a son of the former Meredith Baldwin and Ralph Moore. He was a 1958 graduate of Elmira Free Academy, where he excelled in basketball.

At the College, Moore majored in economics and was a member of Doers & Thinkers, Was Los, Pentagon, and Chi Psi. He also played on the men’s basketball team and served in student government.

Recalling the influence of his years on the Hill, Moore wrote for his 50th reunion yearbook, “With the exception of my parents’ guidance, the years I spent at Hamilton, my professors, my fraternity brothers, and many classmates have all had a major impact on my life in many and profound ways.”

Moore earned an LL.B. from Cornell University School of Law in 1965 and returned to Elmira where he would practice law for 51 years. He was the managing partner at Moore & Woodhouse, LLP. For many years he worked alongside his nephew, Scott Moore ’84. Outside of his practice, Moore served as justice and attorney for the Town of Elmira, as assistant Chemung County attorney, and as a member of the New York State Committee on Professional Standards.

According to a published obituary, Moore’s love for his hometown was evident in everything he did. He was a 30-year volunteer with the LPGA Corning Classic, serving as sponsorship chairman. He was director and president of multiple local organizations, including Southern Tier Economic Growth, Chemung County Chamber of Commerce, Elmira Downtown Development, Elmira-Corning All Sports Committee, United Cerebral Palsy, and American Red Cross, among others.

John V. Moore died on Sept. 25, 2018. He was 78. Previously married to the former Lynda Salyer in 1963, he is survived by his second wife of 28 years, Jeri; two daughters, including Martha Moore Frankel ’94; two stepsons; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son. Other Hamilton connections included his brother, Ralph Moore ’59, and a grandniece, Sarah Moore ’16.
