Because Hamilton Remembers

Robert Arthur Binner, Jr. '76
Oct. 6, 1954-Oct. 4, 2021
Robert Arthur Binner, Jr. ’76 died unexpectedly on Oct. 4, 2021, at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, Md. Born in Buffalo on Oct. 6, 1954, he grew up in Cheektowaga, N.Y., and came to Hamilton from Maryvale High School. Bob was a member of the Emerson Literary Society and majored in biology to prepare for a medical career.
From the College, Bob proceeded to Albany Medical College and earned his medical degree in 1980. He met Madelaine Louise Boucher during this time at the wedding of his classmate Gary Pandolfi ’76. They married on June 7, 1980, in her hometown, Hartford, Conn., and had two children, Elizabeth and Joshua.
After he completed his pediatric residency at Hartford Hospital in 1983, Bob joined Tufts University Medical Center in Boston for his residency in anesthesiology. He completed the program two years later.
Starting in 1985, Bob practiced medicine for 33 years. He began at Buffalo Children’s Hospital and proceeded to Duke University Hospital in Durham, N.C., where he received the teacher of the year award as an attending physician in the department of anesthesiology. Next, he became director of anesthesiology at the Women’s Christian Association Hospital in Jamestown, N.Y. His final position was at the Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore. He retired in 2018 to Kent Island, Md., in the Chesapeake Bay and later moved to its eastern shore.
In his spare time, Bob was an enthusiastic gardener and celebrated by friends and family for his canned dilly beans. He was also something of a stand-up comedian. On more than one occasion, he would start a joke before he anesthetized a patient and only deliver the punchline post-surgery. In retirement he was director of Bridge Church, a food pantry in Annapolis, and delivered donated food to Heritage Baptist Church and other local food pantries. He was also very active in his parish, Island Alliance Church.
Robert A. Binner, Jr. is survived by his wife, daughter, and son.
