Jeffrey Hammond Long '05

Feb. 25, 1982-Jul. 8, 2018

Jeffrey Hammond Long ’05, a technology and business consultant of Washington, D.C., and Greenwich, Conn., was born in New York City, N.Y., on Feb. 25, 1982, the son of the former Nancy Nesky, a fashion magazine editor, and David Long, a business consultant. He graduated from the Brunswick School in Greenwich in 2000.

Long entered the College in 2001 after a fall semester at the University of Salamanca in Spain. At Hamilton, he majored in world politics with a minor in Spanish. Long was a member of the basketball team, the Inter-Society Council, and HAVOC. He served as a leader of the Adirondack Adventure program and participated in the Washington D.C. program. A Dean’s List student and an Arthur Levitt Scholar, he was a member of the Was Los Honor Society.

Pursuing his interest in politics, Long interned for former President Clinton at the Clinton Foundation’s New York office, as well as for then Sen. John Kerry of Massachusetts on his 2004 presidential campaign.

Writing for a 2003 Class & Charter Day ceremony form, when his achievements on the Hill were recognized, Long reflected, “What I enjoy most about Hamilton is the people that make up this special college. The accessibility of the faculty is an important asset. My education is helping me attain goals for the future by proving that through hard work and determination, anything is possible.”

After graduation, Long worked for technology, health, and information service companies, including the Revolution Health Group and DNA Direct. He earned an M.B.A. at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business in 2015.

He also worked on Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal’s 2011 senatorial campaign, as well as in his U.S. Senate office until April 2015. Long then managed state and local sales development for Dataminr, a technology company that provides real-time information to government, news, and bank clients.

An avid skier, runner, biker, and home brewer, Long was community-oriented and loved telling and hearing great stories, an obituary noted.

Jeffrey H. Long died on July 8, 2018, at 36 years of age. He was critically injured by a truck while riding his bicycle in Washington the previous day. Long is survived by his wife, the former Kaylie Hanson, whom he had married in 2016.
