John William Fancher '40

Nov. 8, 1916-Feb. 24, 2005

John William Fancher ’40, grew up in Syracuse, NY, where he was born on November 8, 1916. A son of Francis J. and Marion Angell Fancher, he entered Hamilton in 1935 from Nottingham High School in Syracuse. A member of the Squires Club and the cross-country and golf teams, he left the Hill with a B.S. degree in 1940 and later attended Columbia University. During World War II he served as a medical corpsman in the U.S. Army.

The College thereafter lost contact with John Fancher and has no information about his subsequent life and activities. According to his obituary in the Palm Beach (FL) Post, “He worked in the motion picture industry in New York,” and “was an epicurean who loved music and art, and was himself an accomplished painter. He loved to play tennis and golf, and to hike and be out in nature.”

John W. Fancher was residing in West Palm Beach when he died on February 24, 2005, of cancer. He is survived by his wife, Reidun; a daughter, Trudi Bick; and two grandsons, a sister, and a brother.
