Robert Stephen Gyenge '75

Jan. 26, 1953-Apr. 22, 2021

Robert Stephen Gyenge ’75 died on April 22, 2021, of acute myeloid leukemia at Houston Methodist Hospital’s Cancer Center in Texas. Born in Trenton, N.Y., on Jan. 26, 1953, he came to Hamilton from St. Anthony’s High School in Trenton.

A member of Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, he majored in history. Upon graduating, he entered the bank training program at Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co. Thereafter, Bob specialized in international banking, rising to the position of vice president of the bank’s international division. In 1978, he married Marianne Louise Gilbert in Warwick, R.I., a marriage that would subsequently end in divorce.

Bob’s work took them to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for four years beginning in 1981; he served as country manager for Manufacturers Hanover. For 10 years he led the sovereign debt restructuring group in crafting successful agreements with Jordan and Brazil, among several other countries. He retired in 2000, after 25 years with Manufacturers Hanover and its successor, J.P. Morgan Chase.

In retirement, Bob relocated to Houston, where he pursued a number of interests. He coached the soccer, basketball, softball, and volleyball teams on which his daughter Sydney played and volunteered for numerous events at the St. Francis Episcopal School where she was a student. Bob was also a golfer, fly fisherman, dog lover, and sports enthusiast. His favorite teams were the New York Yankees and the Dallas Cowboys.

Robert S. Gyenge is survived by his daughter and his partner of 25 years, Charlotte L. Bentlif.
