Because Hamilton Remembers
Walter Beinecke, Jr.,
May. 23, 2004
Walter Beinecke, Jr., a life trustee of the College and former chairman of the board of Kirkland College, died on May 23, 2004, at his home on the island of Nantucket. He was 86 years old.
Appointed as a charter trustee in 1960, Walter Beinecke chaired the trustee committee that was instrumental in the planning that led to the creation of Kirkland College. His benefactions to Hamilton were many and, in appreciation, Hamilton’s Student Activities Village bears his name. An heir to the S&H Green Stamps fortune, he never attended college, but he became devoted to Hamilton and its welfare. Beyond College Hill he was best known for his contributions to the historic preservation and the commercial revitalization of his beloved Nantucket.
Note: Memorial biographies published prior to 2004 will not appear on this list.
