Kenneth Packard Miner, Jr.

Kenneth Packard Miner, Jr. '60

Jul. 14, 1936-Oct. 18, 2018

Kenneth Packard Miner, Jr. ’60, a high school history and economics teacher of Weston, Vt., and Greenwich, Conn., was born on July 14, 1936, in Boston, the son of the former Ethel Kelm and Kenneth Miner. He grew up in Belmont, Mass., and graduated from Belmont Hill School.

Miner majored in economics and government at Hamilton. He was a member of the International Relations Club, WHC radio station, and Theta Delta Chi. For his 25th reunion yearbook, Miner remarked that “The most probable cause of my success [was] due to the smallness of the college at the time. The interest and caring of the teaching and administrative staff … to be specific.”

Following his graduation, Miner earned an M.Ed. from Cornell University in 1962, funded by the Ford Foundation, and enjoyed a long career as a teacher. He instructed students in American history and economics at Edgemont Senior High School in Scarsdale, N.Y., for 36 years and also served as chair of the history department, president of the Edgemont Teachers Association, and contract negotiator.

Miner served his community as head of the Pleasantville, N.Y., ambulance corps, a driver for the Greenwich Red Cross, and as an elected member of the Greenwich Town Board. He enjoyed spending summers sailing the waters of Long Island Sound and Cape Cod and was active with the Old Greenwich Yacht Club, serving as commodore.

Following his retirement to Weston, he served on the local school board, the Education Foundation, and the historical society. For many years, he enjoyed traveling, skiing, golfing, and his small farm where he raised sheep for meat and wool for yarn.

Kenneth P. Miner, Jr. died on Oct. 18, 2018. He was 82. Miner is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Carol Lorenz, who was also a teacher at Edgemont. An earlier marriage to the former Helen Page Miller, with whom he had three children, had ended in divorce.
