Timothy Edward Hale '82

Mar. 28, 1960-Jan. 18, 2022

Timothy Edward Hale ’82 died on Jan. 18, 2022, in Montgomery, N.Y. Born in Batavia, N.Y., on March 28, 1960, he was raised in Brockport, N.Y., and came to Hamilton from Brockport High School.

On the Hill, he majored in biology and was a member of Psi Upsilon fraternity. He played on the basketball team all four years and was team captain as a senior. He also played on Psi U’s intramural teams and volunteered to work with handicapped children in Utica.

From Hamilton, Tim headed to Tufts University School of Dental Medicine to prepare for a career in dentistry and related general surgery. During the course of his studies, he met Jane Jensen, a resident of Norwood, Mass., who trained as a dental hygienist. They married in October 1986 and had three sons.

Completing his studies in 1986, Tim conducted his residency at St. Luke’s Memorial Hospital in Utica and established a cosmetic dental practice with Peter V. Masci ’81 in Montgomery. Jane was their dental hygienist.

Over the course of 34 years, the partnership of Masci and Hale prospered and expanded. Patients from throughout the lower Hudson Valley sought their services. While practicing, Tim sat on dental boards for 3M, Pentron Technologies, Zia Pharmaceuticals, Ultradent, and Micro-Dental Laboratories. He also formed The Academy of Comprehensive Esthetics, providing services to more than 12,000 dentists in this country and abroad. Tim retired in August 2020.

Tim’s undergraduate athletic career laid the foundation for his community service. He coached his sons’ basketball teams, was a supportive fan at their football and lacrosse games, and not forgetting his roots in western New York, was a Buffalo Bills fan. He enjoyed skiing, weightlifting, running, and camping with his family. He was also a member of the Lion’s Club and the Wallkill, N.Y., Chamber of Commerce.

Tim was emphatic about the impact of his education on the Hill and wrote in his 25th reunion yearbook: “Choosing to attend Hamilton College was probably my first and single most important decision I ever made.” He added in a 1990 alumni survey: “My educational experience was excellent in preparing me for rigorous training at Tufts University of Dental Medicine and later my residency at St. Luke’s Hospital in Utica. My friends from Hamilton and especially former teammates are still my closest. It formed the foundation necessary for my career as a general dentist.”

Timothy E. Hale is survived by his wife, three sons, and his brother, Thomas P. Hale ’94.
