Jonathan Galt Greenwald

Jonathan Galt Greenwald '56

May. 3, 1936-Jul. 25, 2018

Jonathan Galt Greenwald ’56, an internist and cardiologist of Westport, Conn., was born on May 3, 1936, in New York City, the son of the former Bernice Galt and Bernard Greenwald, a musician. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School.

At Hamilton, he majored in biology and chemistry. Greenwald was a member of the Squires, Charlatans, College Band, and the Outing Club.

For his 40th reunion yearbook, Greenwald reminisced about the College’s impact on his life: “1. Succeed — through hard, dull slogging effort.” Writing for his 50th reunion he recalled, tongue-in-cheek, “Dr. Hess telling me that I’d never get into medical school unless I shaved regularly. The rest is history.”

Greenwald graduated in 1960 with an M.D. from the Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York City and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1962 to 1964. He launched his solo practice in cardiology and internal medicine in Norwalk, Conn., which he maintained for nearly 50 years. Greenwald championed the use of automated external defibrillators at scholastic sporting events.

Continuing in the legacy of his musician father, Greenwald was also a clarinetist, bagpiper, and banjo and guitar player, according to a published obituary. He played in many musical ensembles, including the Oriskany Rhythm Kings, the Norfield Wind Quintet, the Fairfield Pipe and Drum Corps, and the Westport Community Band. In recent years he taught music to children at The Roosevelt School in Bridgeport, Conn.

Jonathan G. Greenwald died on July 25, 2018. He was 82 and is survived by his wife of 60 years, the former Barbara Kellerman, two sons, and five grandchildren.
