“Submultiplicativity of Norms for Spaces of Generalized BV-functions,” an article by Robert Kantrowitz ’82, professor and chair of mathematics, was published in the current issue of Real Analysis Exchange.

Ann Silversmith, professor of physics, presented a lecture on March 29 at Ithaca College. “Synthesis and spectroscopy of rare earth based sol-gel glasses” reported results of work done with Kate Arpino ’10 and Andrew Beyler ’10. Silversmith also presented this work earlier in the semester at Davidson College.

Associate Professor of Music Heather Buchman made her opera conducting debut when she led the Society for New Music in the world premiere of Eleanor Roosevelt, a new chamber opera by composer Persis Parshall Vehar, on March 26 and 27 in Syracuse.

Andrew Dykstra, assistant professor of mathematics, gave a colloquium talk at Northwestern University on March 15. Dykstra's talk described recent work with his Hamilton colleague Michelle LeMasurier and Ethan Coven from Wesleyan University.

Hamilton will host the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Conference, an academic conference that will focus on teaching and learning for a meaningful life, on Saturday, April 2.  The conference is supported by the Christian A. Johnson Endeavor Foundation and will take place in the Kennedy Auditorium, Science Center.

Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg delivered two presentations on Chinese art history at the Institut national d’histoire de l’art in Paris on March 18.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, presented papers  at the International Studies Association annual convention in Montreal and at Linnaeus University in Sweden in March.

Associate Professor of Sociology Yvonne Zylan is the author of a new book, States of Passion: Law, Identity, and Social Construction of Desire (Oxford University Press, March, 2011).

An article co-authored by Ernest Williams, the Christian A. Johnson Excellence in Teaching Professor of Biology, recently appeared online in the journal Insect Conservation and Diversity. “Decline of monarch butterflies overwintering in Mexico: is the migratory phenomenon at risk?” will appear in a forthcoming print issue of the publication, which is a journal of the Royal Entomological Society.

Professor of Mathematics Richard Bedient presented a workshop for the mathematics faculty at Pittsfield High School in Pittsfield, Mass., on March 11, as part of the department's professional development program. The topic was an introduction to fractal geometry and was based on a summer workshop program at Yale in which Bedient participated for a number of years. He also spoke to a math class on the same topic.
