The American Alliance of Museums published "It’s Time to Sell the Sizzle," an essay by the Wellin Museum’s Educator for School and Community Programs Amber Spadea, on its Center for the Future of Museums blog this month.

Margaret W. and Joseph L. Fisher Art Gallery will be exhibiting four large format drawing installations and eight portrait studies by Raye Leith (Osserman) K’78. The gallery is located in Alexandria, Virginia, at the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall and Arts Center.  

Hamilton’s combined Fallcoming and Family Weekend, Oct. 9-12, will celebrate the arts with a number of exciting events including the dedication of The Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts, the opening of the new Alyson Shotz exhibit in the Wellin Museum, and addresses by national leaders in the arts world.

Among the opportunities that the Hamilton Art Department provides its students is the annual New York City Artist’s Studio Tour. On Sept. 11-13, the senior art concentrators, led by professors Katherine Kuharic, Robert Knight and Rebecca Murtaugh, ventured to New York City to visit the studios, galleries and homes of five practicing artists.

Although the school year has ended, the campus is still bustling with activity. In particular, it’s hard to miss the some 120 people working on the new Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts, which will be opening its doors this fall. The building is in its final stages of construction, representing over 13 years of planning and millions of dollars in donations and serving as a beacon for the arts on the Hill. The Kennedy Center, positioned directly  across College Hill Road from the Wellin Art Museum, will offer students and faculty incredible spaces in which to create, teach and  perform.

Hamilton College will name its theatre and studio arts building for Kevin and Karen Kennedy in recognition of their lifetime giving to the college, including $10 million for the new project. They are the lead donors to the $46.8 million building that is located directly across College Hill Road from the Ruth and Elmer Wellin Museum of Art, which opened in 2012.

Construction on Hamilton’s new theatre and studio arts building continues at a rapid pace, with interior work well underway and finish work taking place in some areas.

Hamilton’s up-and-coming artists and actors will have an integrated home when the new theatre and studio arts complex is completed in July 2014.  The new center will contain three main areas for the arts, theatre and digital arts and by virtue of its central location will become the “front porch” of campus,  according to Professor of Music Sam Pellman, who has led the campus planning committee for the new arts facilities.
