Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology emeritus and lecturer in biology, discussed threats to the monarch butterfly population in lectures in Ithaca, Fayetteville and Canastota, N.Y.

The New York Times published a letter to the editor written by Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology Emeritus, titled Challenges Facing the Monarch Butterfly on March 7. In response to a Feb. 28 article titled Monarch Butterfly Migration Rebounds Easing Some Fears, Williams pointed out that, “...this year’s measurement remains less than a quarter of what it was 20 years ago.”

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology emeritus and lecturer in biology, was a co-author of an article published in the current issue of the Annals of the Entomological Society of America.

In an article on the news site of the journal Science on varying studies related to monarch butterfly migration declines, Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology Emeritus and lecturer in biology, warned that concerns over migration “should be added to—but not replace—the other issues we know to be affecting monarchs.” The Aug. 5 article was titled “Monarch butterfly studies tell a perplexing tale.”

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology emeritus and lecturer in biology, recently published two articles about monarch butterflies. “Microclimatic Protection of Overwintering Monarchs Provided by Mexico’s High-Elevation Oyamel Fir Forests: A Review” appears as a book chapter, and “Enhancing Monarch Butterfly Reproduction by Mowing Fields of Common Milkweed” was published in The American Midland Naturalist.

Ernest Williams, the William R. Kenan Professor of Biology emeritus, presented “Monarch Butterflies: An Endangered Migration” on April 16 at the Discovery Center of the Albany Pine Bush Preserve. The talk was part of the center’s Science Lecture Series.

Three longtime members of Hamilton’s science faculty retired during the last academic year. Eugene Domack, Timothy Elgren and Ernest Williams had a combined 79 years of service at Hamilton.
