Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies Brent Plate participated at several venues during the American Academy of Religion (AAR) conference held Nov. 22-25 in San Diego. The meeting, held alongside the Society for Biblical Literature annual meeting, is the largest gathering of religious studies scholars in the world according to the AAR website.

Six students have been selected to receive the Class of 1979 Student Travel Award. The award, established by the alumni of Hamilton’s Class of 1979, offers financial assistance to Hamilton students who wish to pursue extensive research projects in different parts of the world.

Supervisor of Introductory Laboratories Jason Townsend was the first author of a chapter titled “Energy Return on Investment (EROI), Liquid Fuel Production, and Consequences for Wildlife” that was recently published in Peak Oil, Economic Growth, and Wildlife Conservation.

Danny Lustberg ’14, and Douglas Weldon, the Stone Professor of Psychology, presented a poster at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 19. Meghan Hind, a student at Harvard University was a coauthor of the presentation.

The Hamilton Art Collective asked students and faculty to come together and participate in an enormous installation and drawing marathon in Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts on Dec. 6. 

Associate Professor of Biology Mike McCormick gave seminar talks on his recent work in Antarctica on Dec. 2 at the Woods Hole Marine Biological Laboratory Ecosystems Center and on Nov. 14 at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science.

Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald delivered the annual Rajiv Vaidya Film Lecture on Dec. 7 at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He spoke on the New York Film Society Cinema 16 and presented a program that demonstrated the programming strategy developed by Amos Vogel at Cinema 16 between 1947 and 1963 – a strategy that expanded the film culture of New York City and the nation.

The Hamilton College Department of Music presents the Hamilton College Jazz Ensemble’s winter concert, “Jazz is Up!” on  Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.

Peter J. Rabinowitz and Corinne Bancroft ’10 were invited to lead an interactive session at the National Council of Teachers of English Conference on Nov. 21, in Washington, D.C. Rabinowitz is the Carolyn C. and David M. Ellis ’38 Distinguished Teaching Professor of Comparative Literature.

President Joan Hinde Stewart has announced her plan to retire on June 30, 2016, after 13 years leading the liberal arts college. Stewart informed members of the Hamilton Board of Trustees during their quarterly meeting Friday in New York City. When she concludes her presidency in 18 months, Stewart will be the eighth longest serving president in the College’s 200-year history.
