Update: 5:57 p.m. After conducting a thorough sweep of Kirner-Johnson and adjacent buildings with bomb-sniffing dogs, the New York State Police has recommended that Hamilton College fully lift its shelter-in-place order that was enacted this morning. Since the bomb threat was judged to be unsubstantiated and no evidence exists to validate the accompanying threat of a possible shooter, the police are now focusing on finding the perpetrator of this incident. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. We are also grateful to the approximately 50 local, county and state police officers who responded from across New York State. Several State Police officers will remain on campus tonight and tomorrow.

Professor of Music Sam Pellman was honored as the 2015 Distinguished Service Award recipient by Hamilton’s Alumni Association. John Hadity ’83, president of the Alumni Association, presented the award on April 10 during the Alumni Council’s Recognition dinner.

Right before Spring Break, members of Hamilton Microfinance  met with Tom Owens, CEO of ACCESS Federal Credit Union in Clinton, to evaluate the application of their second loan candidate this year. The recipient chosen was Joseph Rogers who remarked, “I'm truly thankful for the opportunity to realize the dream of starting and owning my own business.”

Hamilton continues its celebration of April Jazz Appreciation Month with a performance by jazz vocalist Janis Siegel with pianist Rick Montalbano on Sunday, April 12, at 7 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn.  The event, sponsored by the Fillius Jazz Archive and hosted by Monk Rowe, is free and open to the public.

Bells in municipal towers and religious buildings – including Hamilton’s chapel bell – rang across the country on April 9 at 3:15 p.m. to commemorate the time 150 years ago when Generals Grant and Lee exited the Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia bringing the Civil War to an end.

Danielle Gauthier ’15 has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Germany. A German studies and English literature major at Hamilton, she studied abroad at Universität Tübingen, in Tübingen, Germany, in spring 2014.

With the current state of the American job market, many college students are faced with a tough decision: whether they should study what they love, or pursue a discipline that is “safer bet” for one’s job prospects. This dilemma has led to an increased focus on the physical sciences and a cultural devaluation of the study of the humanities.

Although campus was empty, the Hamilton Outing Club was very active during Spring Break. Over the course of two weeks HOC trips visited far-flung places from Mt. Katahdin in Maine to the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina.

Co-Director of the Digital Humanities Initiative (DHi) Janet Simons, Philippa (Pippa) Schwarzkopf ’16 and John Bartle, associate professor of German and Russian languages and literatures, gave an invited presentation of two short films on April 2 at Hartwick College.

Hamilton College Performing Arts concludes the 2014-15 Performing Arts Series with Laurie Anderson presenting The Language of the Future on Saturday, April 11, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center.
