The Hamilton College Performing Arts Series will present a concert by the Symphony Syracuse (now operating under the name Musical Associates of Central New York) on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center. Conducted by Associate Professor of Music Heather Buchman, the program includes Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, Mozart Violin Concerto No. 5 with soloist Jeremy Mastrangelo, and Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler.

Lauren Howe ’13 and Eunice Choi ’14 travelled to the 2012 International Slow Food Congress in Turin, Italy, Oct. 25-29.

Columbia University Professor Eric Foner, preeminent historian of the Civil War era, will discuss his latest book, The Fiery Trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery, on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, K.J.  Foner is the DeWitt Clinton Professor of History at Columbia University and specializes in the Civil War and Reconstruction, slavery and 19th century America.  The lecture is free and open to the public.

When there is an emergency involving illness or injury on Hamilton’s campus, student EMTs can reach somebody in need within minutes. The team that forms Hamilton College Emergency Medical Services (HCEMS) consists of 21 students from a wide variety of backgrounds and interests. This week, Hamilton recognizes their efforts through the National Collegiate Emergency Services Foundation’s National Collegiate EMS Week.

Hamilton students won the first round of the College Fed Challenge competition  on Friday, Nov. 9. The team of presenters - seniors Eric Boole, Danny Kaufman, Aislinn Shea and Amanda Thorman - advance to the semi-final round of the challenge to be held at the New York Federal Reserve on Wednesday, November 14. The first round was hosted by the Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center.

Author and University of Pennsylvania professor Annette Lareau will give a lecture titled “Unequal Childhoods” on Wednesday, Nov. 14, at 7:30 p.m., in the Fillius Events Barn.  Lareau is the Stanley I. Sheer Professor of Sociology in the School of Arts and Sciences at Penn.  The lecture, part of the Levitt Center’s Inequality and Equity series, is free and open to the public.

Hamilton College will host a fundraiser through next week for hurricane relief in Union Beach, N.J.  This relief effort is spearheaded by Sandhya Rao’15, who lives near Union Beach.  The small, beach-front town was devastated by Hurricane Sandy.

In the last talk of a semester-long series on the election season, The Publius Society invited Professor Phil Klinkner of Hamilton’s Government Department to give his thoughts in “An Election Post-Mortem.”

The Nov. 13 lecture by author and explorer Wade Davis has been postponed due to circumstances beyond his control.  Davis is an explorer-in-residence for the National Geographic Society, which has named him as one of the Explorers of the Millennium. The possibility of rescheduling the event is yet to be determined.

Professor of Art William Salzillo’s intaglio print, “The Minotaur,” is on display in “Art of Democracy: 2012” at the Sacred Gallery in New York City. The juried show, presented by The New York Society of Etchers, Inc., is on display through Nov. 30.
