A book review by Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg was published in the latest issue of The China Journal No. 69 (January 2013), 245-247.  The review is of A New Thoughtfulness in Contemporary China: Critical Voices in Art and Aesthetics, edited by Jörg Huber and Zhao Chuan. Hong Kong University Press, 2011.

In keeping with this winter’s weather pattern of snow /no snow, the 2013 FebFest theme is “Meltdown.” The annual winter tradition will take place Feb. 9-16 with events that include CAB Acoustic Coffeehouse featuring Josh Ritter, CAB Comedy with Michael Ian Black, the 20th annual Chili Cookoff, and the Mr. Hamilton contest. Some FebFest highlights follow.

Breena Holland, associate professor of political science and the environmental initiative at Lehigh University, takes a different approach to academic research than many of her colleagues. Holland is less interested in massive data driven studies and more concerned with the real world impact of her work. That’s why much of her time has been spent conducting research intended to directly benefit underprivileged members of Lehigh’s local community of Bethlehem, Pa.  Holland was a guest speaker in the Levitt Center Sustainability series on Feb. 7.

Seamlessly and loquaciously describing his experiences as an embedded combat advisor, Hamilton alumnus Matt Zeller ’04 returned to the Hill on Feb. 7 to present a sobering yet inspirational recounting of his service in Afghanistan and the lessons he learned there.

Visiting Professor of Art History Scott MacDonald will present the first film in the spring 2013 F.I.L.M. (Forum on Image and Language in Motion) series on Sunday, Feb. 10, at 2 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium. The Eye of the Day (2001) is part one of filmmaker Leonard Retel Helmrich’s Indonesian Trilogy. The screening is free and open to the public.

Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate says, “This year's Oscar line-up is once again rife with religious references, and the entertainment industry may be overtaking religious institutions as the prime mythmakers and ritual producers in a society where the 'nones' are on the rise.”

John G. Rice ’78, vice chair of General Electric Company (GE), was featured on Bloomberg Television’s “Surveillance” in an interview that identified him as a graduate of Hamilton College and referenced the College’s Economics department.

The Hamilton College Department of Music staged the annual choir musical, Iolanthe, with book by W.S. Gilbert and music by Arthur Sullivan.  The fully staged show, performed Feb. 8-10, was directed by G. Roberts Kolb with choreography by Nancy Long and set and lighting design by William DiPaolo.

Immerse yourself in a visual and textual telling of Hamilton history with the new Hamilton Timeline, a dramatic digital rendering of the Hill past and present.  The timeline, designed to celebrate Hamilton’s Bicentennial, recounts the history of the college starting with the pre-Hamilton days and Samuel Kirkland’s plan to educate the Indians. Significant events in Hamilton’s history are portrayed through photos and text.

Lehigh University political science and environmental initiative professor Breena Holland will present a lecture titled “Public Health and Environmental Justice in an Era of De-Industrialization: A Role for Community-Engaged Academic Research” on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium (G027). Her lecture is part of the Levitt Center’s Sustainability Series and is free and open to the public.
