In an April 15 visit to Hamilton College, Senior Vice President and President of Merrill Lynch Global Research Candace Browning Platt P'10 gave an honest and engaging lecture on her career and the advice that she would like to pass down to those interested in finance.

Professor of History Thomas Wilson has co-authored a book with University of California Berkeley Professor Michael Nylan titled Lives of Confucius: Civilization's Greatest Sage Through the Ages (Doubleday Religion, 4/10).

Herm Lehman, chair and associate professor of biology, has published a chapter titled “The Cellular and Molecular Biology of Octopaminergic Neurons” in Biogenic Amines: Pharmacological, Neurochemical and Molecular Aspects in the CNS, edited by Tahira Farooqui and Akhlaq A. Farooqui (Nova Science Publishers, 2010).

Stephen Okin '10, a candidate for May graduation from Hamilton, has been awarded a Fulbright Grant to Barbados. He will pursue a master’s degree in integration studies at the University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus in Barbados. Through his project Okin seeks to understand the role regional cooperation plays in the eastern Caribbean, which faces unique challenges due to its history, geography and limited resources. Specifically he’ll focus on security cooperation by volunteering at a regional security organization.

Katharine Cashman became an expert on Mount St. Helens largely by accident. She isn’t a great geologist, she said during her presentation on April 13 in the Science Center, because she likes studying geologic processes that unfold on a time scale that she can watch. Volcanic activity is one such process, and Cashman, the head of the geosciences department at the University of Oregon, has devoted much of her life to studying the science behind the eruptions of Mount St. Helens.

Katharine Dilyard ’10, a candidate for May graduation from Hamilton, has been awarded a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) to Russia. Dilyard is a world politics and Russian studies major at Hamilton.

Hamilton students are having an impressive year in being named the recipients of national fellowships and scholarships. Among the awards are the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, Fulbright grants and NSF Graduate Research Fellowships.

Professor of Communication Catherine W. Phelan published an article titled “How to Study Communication: Notes On a Method” in the Journal of Cultural Studies – Critical Methodologies (9) 3. (438-445). The article details the varied ways to study communication.

Hamilton Professor of Music Michael R. “Doc” Woods will present a lecture titled “America's Music: A Return to Skill and Culture” as the next event in the Hamilton College - Imagining America series on Wednesday, April 14, at 7:30 p.m., at The Other Side. The Other Side is located at 2011 Genesee St. in Utica, across from the Uptown Theater and next to the Cafe Domenico. Parking is available, and admission is free.

Professor of Comparative Literature Peter J. Rabinowitz delivered a paper, “Doctor Atomic Meets Frankenstein: Science, Ethics, and Rhetoric,” at the 25th International Conference on Narrative in Cleveland on April 10.
