  • Professor of Art Bill Salzillo has been elected to the Society of American Graphic Artists. Over the years the membership has included most of America's foremost printmakers. Membership in the society enables artists to show their work in New York City through important exhibitions with substantial awards.

  • Cathie Black, president of Hearst Magazines, told Hamilton's Class of 2009 to be agents of change at its commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 24. She also discussed changes underway in the media industry and the value of having first-rate communication skills.

  • After last year's successful launch of Ham's Cram & Scram, the recycling effort is back and it appears that it will surpass last year's collection. The purpose of Cram & Scram is to collect recyclable/reusable items from residence halls – everything from furniture and appliances to clothing, books and unopened food items. Rather than throwing the items away and sending them to the county landfill, they are collected and sorted for reuse.

  • Hamilton students Katerina Adair '10, Katie Anderson '11, and Kenley Stark '11 visited glass artist Josh Simpson '72 at his studio in Shelburne Falls, Ma., this week. The students are working with Susanna White, the Emerson Gallery's associate director and curator, to organize an exhibition of Simpson's work.

  • Twenty-four members of Hamilton's class of 2009 were elected on May 21 to the Epsilon chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's oldest honor society. They join 24 classmates who were elected earlier this year.

  • Paul Peterzell '58 was honored early this month as volunteer of the year by Marin County, California. Peterzell, who has volunteered for more than a decade as a mediator in the district attorney's office, works with six other volunteers in the office to resolve disputes between consumers and businesses there. A government major while at Hamilton and member of the Squires, Peterzell went on to get a master's degree in journalism at Columbia.
