In keeping with this winter’s weather pattern of snow /no snow, the 2013 FebFest theme is “Meltdown.” The annual winter tradition will take place Feb. 9-16 with events that include CAB Acoustic Coffeehouse featuring Josh Ritter, CAB Comedy with Michael Ian Black, the 20th annual Chili Cookoff, and the Mr. Hamilton contest. Some FebFest highlights follow.

John G. Rice ’78, vice chair of General Electric Company (GE), was featured on Bloomberg Television’s “Surveillance” in an interview that identified him as a graduate of Hamilton College and referenced the College’s Economics department.

Hamilton College is number No. 18 on Peace Corps’ 2013 Top Colleges for small schools, those with a student population under 5,000. The annual list recognizes the highest volunteer-producing colleges and universities in the U.S. for small, medium, large and graduate institutions.

Matt Zeller ’04, who served as an embedded combat adviser with the Afghan security forces in Ghazni and then wrote about his experiences, will give a lecture on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m., in the Bradford Auditorium, KJ. The lecture, titled after his book “Watches Without Time: An American Soldier in Afghanistan,” is free and open to the public.

More than 80 students volunteered at non-profit agencies in the local community on Saturday, Jan. 26, for Hamilton’s 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day. Hamilton Association for Volunteering, Outreach and Charity (HAVOC) sent groups of students to 19 different sites to spend the afternoon working on various projects.

The scholarly achievements of female faculty authors in the humanities and social sciences at Hamilton College were celebrated at a book party in the Burke Library this winter.

Associate Professor of Psychology Jen Borton and five students attended the annual conference of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology in New Orleans, Jan. 17-21. The students had conducted research with Borton in 2011 or 2012 and presented posters of their work.

During the two weeks before they returned to campus, some 143 Hamilton sophomores got a close look at possible careers as they took part in the third HamiltonExplore, sponsored by the Career Center.

Hamilton College will commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a lecture by Syracuse University Law Professor Paula Johnson and a dinner on Monday, Jan. 28, beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Tolles Pavilion. A soul food dinner menu will be served. The event is free for Hamilton students, faculty and staff but reservations are necessary. Click here to reserve.

Three students were inducted into Lambda Pi Eta, the national communication honor society, at the conclusion of the fall 2012 semester. The new members are Alex Gioia ’14, Megan McCareins ’14 and Ben Yudysky ’14. They join current member and chapter president Laurie Sadove ’13.
