The Department of Music will present the home concert of the Hamilton College Choir’s March tour on Friday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m., in Wellin Hall.  The 64-member choir is directed by G. Roberts Kolb, professor of music and director of choral music at Hamilton since 1981.  The concert is free and open to the public.

Professor of History Shoshana Keller was a panelist in a forum titled “Information Exchange and Social Change in the Contemporary Middle East and Central Asia” on March 25 at the State University of New York Institute of Technology (SUNYIT) in Utica.

On the eve of its 10th anniversary, the Hamilton College Mock Trial team finished third in the Opening Round Championship Series (ORCS) on March 23-25, and qualified for the national championship tournament in April. Team captain Tyler Roberts ’12 won an Outstanding Attorney award and Patrick Bedard ’14 won an Outstanding Witness award.

Three Hamilton students were among 50 recipients of competitive scholarships to the 2012 New York State Summer Writers Institute. Martin Cain ’13, Joseph Michaels ’14 and Sarah Sgro ’14 were chosen from among more than 375 applicants to the prestigious institute that will take place in July at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.  Students were nominated by creative writing faculty at their institutions; applicants included graduate writers in MFA and Ph.D. programs.

Joann Fletcher and Stephen Buckley, research fellows at the University of York, will present the Winslow Lecture at Hamilton College on Thursday, March 29, at 4:10 p.m., in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium. They will discuss the cultural significance and influences of the lesser-known female pharaohs in ancient Egypt. The lecture is sponsored by the Classics Department and is free and open to the public. 

Professor of Comparative Literature Peter J. Rabinowitz gave a paper titled “Deceiving the Future: Lermontov and Narratology of the Moment” at the International Conference on Narrative in Las Vegas on March 17.

Alan Cafruny, the Henry Platt Bristol Professor of International Affairs, gave a  lecture titled “Transatlantic Perspectives on the Crisis of the Eurozone” at the U.S. Consulate in Thessaloniki, Greece, on March 17.  The lecture was sponsored by the U.S. Consul General and the American College of Thessaloniki.

Associate Professor of Art History Stephen J. Goldberg presented a lecture titled “History, Counter-Memory, and the Search for a Modern Identity in Contemporary Chinese Art” on March 20 at Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Ga.

Galia Slayen ’13, a Chinese and government major, has been accepted as a delegate to Forum for American-Chinese Exchange at Stanford University (FACES).  FACES is an exchange program that sends 20 American and 20 Chinese students to Stanford University and then to China to promote cross-cultural exchange. Forty delegates were chosen from among 316 applicants.

Assistant Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus presented an invited talk titled “Critical Assessment of the Scientific Method: Experience, Intuition, and Justification” on March 19 at the University of Southern California (USC).
