  • A week after the 2016 Presidential election, The Spectator hosted “The Role of the Media in the 2016 Election,” the final SpecSpeak lecture of the semester. The guest was Scott Bixby ’11 who spent 16 months covering the Republican race to the White House for The Guardian. Bixby has written for several high-profile news organizations including the New Republic, Mic and The Daily Beast .

  • This week Hamilton celebrates National Collegiate Emergency Medical Services Week, which recognizes the College’s Emergency Medical Service (HCEMS) program. The service is available to all community members of the College 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week during the year when classes are in session. The program is made up of student volunteers who all are New York State certified EMTs.

  • Jazz Tales from Jazz Legends: Oral Histories from the Fillius Jazz Archive at Hamilton College by Monk Rowe, the Joe Williams Director of the Fillius Jazz Archive and lecturer in music, was recently awarded a certificate of merit by the Association for Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC).

  • Janice Hauge ’89 returned to Hamilton on Nov. 11 to present the fourth annual General Josiah Bunting III Veterans Day lecture titled “Thoughts on Gender Roles in the Military.” Hauge is an associate professor and director of graduate admissions for the University of North Texas’ economics department.

  • Multicultural Mayhem celebrated cultural diversity at Hamilton College on Nov. 4 at the Events Barn. Dance performances by local community members and a student fashion show highlighted the evening.

  • Few would argue with the assertion that racism unfortunately persists in America. However, some do contest the prevalence of racism in the criminal justice system. Syracuse University Law School Professor Paula Johnson shed some light on the issue in a lecture on Nov. 10. She explained that we see and experience racism not only when police officers use excessive and unjustified force against black individuals, but we see it also in the lack of accountability for these assaults and killings. Johnson traces this pattern of ignoring racist killings to the death of Emmett Till in 1955, whose killers were acquitted of all charges.
