Hamilton’s Mock Trial team is following up one of its best finishes in program history with another strong start to the season. The team began the season by finishing second at the Colgate Classic Tournament on Nov. 6-7. Hamilton’s team faced teams from Cornell University, Villanova University, Canisius College and Colgate University. Noah Bishop ‘11 won an outstanding attorney award while Lennie Specht ‘11 and Ashley Vanicek ’13 both won outstanding witness awards.

Daniel Feinberg '12 spent the fall semester as a student in the Semester in Environmental Science, in Woods Hole, Mass. The first Hamilton student to participate in the program, he has been measuring the lifetime of Permeable Reactive Barriers, relatively affordable systems that can remove nitrate pollution from groundwater.  Here he describes his experience in the program.

Over fall break, a group of researchers from Hamilton College embarked on a research trip to the Slocan Valley, containing one of the few undammed rivers in the Upper Columbia River Basin of Canada’s British Columbia province. The purpose of their trip was to film interviews with local people regarding the presence of aboriginal people in the valley.

Nine Hamilton College students have been selected as recipients of the Class of 1979 Student Travel Award. The award, established by the alumni of Hamilton's Class of 1979, offers financial assistance to certain outstanding Hamilton students who wish to pursue extensive research projects in different parts of the world.

The 20 residents of the Woollcott House, also known as the CoOp, celebrated Thanksgiving on Nov. 14 with a collaborative feast where each resident made a dish for this yearly tradition.

Nine Hamilton students have received grants from the Steven Daniel Smallen Memorial Fund. The Fund aims to encourage student creativity among Hamilton students by providing funds for projects displaying originality, expressiveness and imagination.

Hamilton students have the opportunity to establish meaningful relationships with local nonprofit organizations beginning in their first semester of college through a pilot program operated by the Hamilton Community Opportunity and Outreach Project (COOP).

Caitlin O’Dowd ’11 has led a life largely driven by international travel. But the effect of having been immersed in so many foreign cultures is like that of a slingshot – despite the heavy pull of foreign relations on her social philosophy and background, O’Dowd is catapulting in a different direction with her research project funded by the Kirkland Endowment. She hopes to concentrate on domestic affairs in what will eventually be a one-year post-graduate research experience.

The Hamilton College Theatre Department’s presentation of Naomi Wallace’s Slaughter City delved into numerous social issues during its November run in Minor Theater.

On Nov. 8, five Hamilton economics students along with Henry Platt Bristol Professor of Economics Ann Owen traveled to New York City to participate in the Federal Reserve / Bank of New York Challenge Championship (the Fed Challenge). The Fed Challenge is a competition designed to “spur interest in the U.S. macro economy by giving teams of students an opportunity to play the role of monetary policymakers,” according to the organizers.
