Associate Professor of Government Sharon Werning Rivera has published an on-line version of a simulated election campaign exercise with Congressional Quarterly Press. The simulation, titled “Elections in West Europa,” is designed to teach students about party systems, campaigns and government formation in established democracies by using active learning strategies.

On the eve of the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, Maurice Isserman, the James L. Ferguson Professor of History and Woodstock attendee, was interviewed by Minnesota Public Radio with Woodstock performer Richie Havens and longtime New York disc jockey Pete Fornatale. The Chronicle of Higher Education published Isserman’s essay, “3 Days of Peace and Music, 40 Years of Memory” on the same day, Aug. 10.

Michael “Doc” Woods, professor of music, wrote a guest editorial for the Utica Observer-Dispatch (8/2/09) titled “Paying the price of being talented – and black.” The piece discussed the recent controversial arrest of Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates and described Woods’ experience of racial profiling when he was followed by a police car after stopping to ask for directions to a symphony office.

Last May, TIME’s senior correspondent for the Middle East described Edward S. Walker, Jr., ’62 as “among the finest American diplomats to have served in the State Department” in a piece titled “Wise Men To Obama: ‘We Stand With You.’”

A letter to the editor by Chad Williams, assistant professor of history, appeared in the July 25 edition of The New York Times. Williams, who specializes in African American history, commented on the recent controversy surrounding the arrrest of the Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and President Barack Obama's subsequent remarks.

Professor of Economics Ann Owen was quoted in a July 9 article about possible effects of the federal government's infusion of cash into the economy. In “Worried About Inflation?,” an article that will appear in the August issue of Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine, Owen responded to questions about declining wealth - the result of falling home prices and the stock-market crash.

Professor of English Vincent Odamtten was one of two guests on Wisconsin Public Radio's show "Here On Earth" on July 13. The program was focused on Ghana's place in Africa, President Obama’s visit to the country and what Africans can expect during the Obama administration. Odamtten, a native of Ghana, said that he thought Obama’s speech was well balanced with good points but he asked, “Will words be followed by deeds?”

"By all means; beg, buy or steal Fallen Giants," begins a recent review of Fallen Giants: A History of Himalayan Mountaineering from the Age of Empire to the Age of Extremes, co-authored by James L. Ferguson Professor of History Maurice Isserman and University of Rochester Professor of History Stewart Weaver.

Assistant Professor of Government Peter Cannavo contributed an op-ed, "Ignorance a Weapon in Climate Debate," to the Syracuse Post-Standard (6/21/09). Cannavo writes "Conservatives have long professed skepticism about the idea of anthropogenic climate change, despite decades of research and reams of studies and warnings from the world's leading climatologists. Such skepticism becomes even less credible when those articulating it lack even a grade-school understanding of the science."
