Simon Coppard, visiting assistant professor of biology, presented a talk on Jan. 5 at The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology annual meeting in Portland, Ore. His talk was titled “Patterns of expression and evolution of cryptochrome and timeless genes involved in lunar spawning: Temporal prezygotic isolation among sympatric species of the pantropical sea urchin Diadema.”

Professor of Mathematics Sally Cockburn gave a talk titled ‘A Senior Seminar in Set Theory as a Springboard for Mathematical Philosophy’ on Jan. 6 at the Joint Mathematical Meetings held in Seattle.

The naming of David Wippman as Hamilton’s 20th president drew a great deal of interest from local media during 2015. Student volunteering efforts as well as the College’s interest in keeping Alexander Hamilton on the $10 bill garnered significant local attention, and faculty members offered expertise on timely news topics throughout the year.

The Hamilton College Arboretum Third Saturday series continues on Saturday, Jan. 16, with Steve Blair, International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) certified arborist and representative of Bartlett Tree Experts. He will present a lecture titled “From the Cradle to the Grave, Tree and Shrub Care for the CNY Homeowner” at 10 a.m. in the Taylor Science Center’s Kennedy Auditorium.

On the heels of two successful edX online course offerings in 2015, Hamilton will debut a third course, Jazz: the Music, the Stories, the Players, presented by Joe Williams Director of the Jazz Archive and Lecturer in Music Performance Monk Rowe beginning on Feb. 2.

Co-ed a cappella group Duelly Noted is preparing for its sixth annual concert tour during Hamilton’s winter break. The four-day tour will include performances in Connecticut, New Jersey and New York.

This year the national media highlighted the college’s focus on expanding access and equalizing experiences on campus in several major articles. Outlets featuring these Hamilton policies and programs included The Chronicle of Higher Education, Huffington Post and the Hechinger Report. The college also received broad national media attention most recently with the announcement of its incoming president, David Wippman, via an Associated Press news story.

The spring semester of Hamilton’s Performing Arts series will feature an exciting season of music and dance in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

After three years of programming featuring 13 exhibitions, 8 publications, 70 public programs and well over 30,000 visitors, the Wellin Museum of Art can add a new milestone to its roster of accomplishments. The museum will be working with distinguished publisher DelMonico Books/Prestel, a subsidiary of Random House, to co-publish and distribute the museum's forthcoming publications.
