Although the school year has ended, the campus is still bustling with activity. In particular, it’s hard to miss the some 120 people working on the new Kevin and Karen Kennedy Center for Theatre and the Studio Arts, which will be opening its doors this fall. The building is in its final stages of construction, representing over 13 years of planning and millions of dollars in donations and serving as a beacon for the arts on the Hill. The Kennedy Center, positioned directly  across College Hill Road from the Wellin Art Museum, will offer students and faculty incredible spaces in which to create, teach and  perform.

Hamilton played host to a group of senior high school students from the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill (VVS) Central School District on May 19. Students from the AP English and AP Biology classes spent the day working on information literacy skills to better prepare them for college.

Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies Brent Plate was invited to be a FIRST (Faculty-in-Residence Summer Term) scholar at the University of Colorado (CU) at Boulder this year.

Hamilton will welcome back more than 1000 alumni and their guests when it hosts the college’s annual Reunion Weekend, this year on Thursday-Sunday, June 5-8. 

The Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center recently announced the 2014 Levitt Summer Research Fellows. To enhance student research around issues of public affairs, the Levitt Center funds student-faculty research through its Levitt Research Fellows Program. The program is open to rising juniors and seniors who wish to spend the summer working in collaboration with a faculty member on an issue related to public affairs. Following are this year’s recipients.

Felipe Garcia’s interest in animals took a more serious turn as he prepared to begin college.  Garcia has long been passionate about animals, spending his summers working at Jungle Island, an interactive zoo located in Miami, Fla. During the summers of his sophomore and junior years at Hamilton Garcia attended the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Medicine Program for undergraduates.

The second Turkish edition of The Neoliberal Landscape and the Rise of Islamic Capital in Turkey, co-authored by Professor of Economics Erol Balkan, was recently published. Balkan’s co-authors were Nesecan Balkan and Ahmet Oncu.

Recipients of the 2014 Emerson Summer Grants were recently announced. Created in 1997, the  program was designed to provide students with significant opportunities to work collaboratively with faculty members, researching an area of interest. The recipients, covering a range of topics, are exploring fieldwork, laboratory and library research, and the development of teaching materials. The students will make public presentations of their research throughout the academic year.

Andrew Gibeley ’16 has been selected to travel to Israel this summer by the Taglit-Birthright Israel project. Gibeley, a creative writing major at Hamilton, will take part in a free, 10-day tour of Israel funded by the project.

The Hamilton College Arboretum will host the A.P. Saunders Peony Festival on Saturday, May 31, from 10 a.m. to noon, in Grant Garden. The festival celebrates the world-class, hybridized tree and herbaceous peonies of the Grant Garden in Hamilton College’s Root Glen. The event is free and the public is invited to attend.
