2020 Bell Ringer
John Frederick Allen ’60
2020 Bell Ringer Award
Citation for John Frederick Allen ’60
Even among our most devoted alumni, no one is more “Hamilton” than you, inside and out — which is why we wondered if today you might be sporting one of your College ties, baseball caps, jackets, or scarves. Your Hamilton haberdashery is renowned, and given your long-standing service to the College, you wear the buff and blue with impeccable authenticity.
Throughout the last decade, your energy for Hamilton has seemed boundless. You’ve been a campaign volunteer, class agent, top prospect volunteer for the Annual Fund, Career Center volunteer, class correspondent, co-regional president for the Metro-New York Alumni Association, reunion gift committee volunteer, class president, and more. Plus, your attendance at New York City alumni events is near perfect.
We are consistently moved by the personal nature of what you share on behalf of your alma mater. One of Hamilton’s hottest tickets is your High Line tour. Alumni, parents, and students queue up to take that walk with you in Chelsea, the longtime neighborhood of you and Beth, another true-blue Hamilton supporter. An accomplished author of cookbooks, Beth has led our students through the NYU special food collection and been part of countless College events. How many times have you and Beth made the trip up the Hill in Bluebonnet, her trusty 1982 Cadillac?
When reflecting on Hamilton’s impact on your life, you’ve spoken of how the College reinforced your belief in integrity and ethics, how you were exposed to diverse perspectives and personalities, and how Dean Tolles wisely advised you to reject early acceptance at Cornell Law. Eventually earning an M.B.A. and building a successful career, you never forgot your alma mater. In 2018, the College’s Advancement Office proclaimed April 12 as John Allen Day recognizing you as a stellar volunteer and loyal Hamiltonian. Today, we too offer you our boundless appreciation as we present you with the Bell Ringer Award.
