Howard H. Cannon ‘23

1976 Bell Ringer Award

Born in Lyons Falls, New York, he attended Harvard Law School after his graduation from Hamilton in 1923. Following the completion of his LL.B degree, he moved to Syracuse to associate with the form of Bond, Schoeneck & King, where he has been a partner for the past thirty-one years. While achieving success within his firm, he also displayed a strong commitment to his community. As a member and chairman of the New York Higher Education Assistance Corporation, he has helped thousands of young people to develop more fully their talents through post-secondary schooling. Many of these youths might not otherwise have had the chance for higher education were it not for his energetic, pioneering efforts. He has also served as President of the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce, President of the Hamilton College Alumni Association of Syracuse, and as a member of the Syracuse Charter Commission. Among the many organizations that proudly claim him as a member of their board of directors are the A.E. Nettleton Company, the Lincoln National Bank and Trust, Blue Shield of Central New York, Inc., the Community Foundations of Syracuse and Onondaga County, and the Unity Mutual Life Insurance Company. He is also chairman of the board of the Cogar Foundation. Awards for his outstanding service have been many. In 1966, the Greater Syracuse Chamber of Commerce presented him with their Man of the Year award for community service. Last year, he was the recipient of Onondaga County’s “Distinguished Lawyer” Award, and now the Hamilton College Alumni Council is proud to salute this distinguished alumnus for the many achievements of a long and fruitful life.
