Assistant Professor of Philosophy Russell Marcus published “The Holistic Presumptions of the Indispensability Argument” in the current issue of the journal Synthese. In the paper, he argues against a variety of philosophers who have developed versions of the indispensability argument which, they claim, do not rely on holism.

Visiting Associate Professor of Religious Studies S. Brent Plate participated in the 17th biennial conference of the International Society for Religion, Literature and Culture (ISRLC) held at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven) in Belgium.

Eugene M. Tobin Distinguished Professor of Sociology Daniel Chambliss, James S. Sherman Professor of Government Philip Klinkner and Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychology Azriel Grysman were highlighted in national publications during the week of Sept. 15.  Chambliss penned an opinion piece for The Chronicle of Higher Education. Klinkner’s remarks appeared on Talking Points Memo (TPM), a major political news website, and Grysman was quoted  in Science of Us, a website within the New York Magazine site.  

Dean of Faculty Patrick D. Reynolds announced the appointment of four of Hamilton’s most outstanding teacher-scholars to endowed chairs. Professor of Philosophy A. Todd Franklin, Professor of Biology Jinnie M. Garrett, Professor of  Environmental Studies Todd W. Rayne and Professor of History Thomas A. Wilson were appointed, effective July 1.

The Hamilton College Department of Music presents a Faculty Recital with Allan Kolsky, clarinet, accompanied by Sar-Shalom Strong, piano, and Michael Bull, snare drum, on Sunday, Sept. 21, at 3 p.m., in Wellin Hall, Schambach Center for Music and the Performing Arts.

To commemorate America’s 227th “Constitution Day,” Professor of Government Robert Martin gave a talk on Sept. 17 titled “Alexander Hamilton’s Constitutional Order” in KJ’s Red Pit. “I come to history with a purpose,” he announced upon his introduction, immediately engaging his audience. The lecture focused on the hostile relationship between government and the press at a time when both were newly formed entities.

Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre Andrew Holland premiered his designs for the new dance piece, "Secrets and Seawalls," at the Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, in Garden City, N.Y., on Sept. 13.

Douglas Weldon, the Stone Professor of Psychology, was recently elected to fellow status in the American Psychological Association (APA).

In an email to the Hamilton community on Sept. 15, President Joan Stewart announced the death of James L. Ferguson Professor of Psychology Jonathan Vaughan. He died on Sunday, Sept. 14, from complications of pneumonia.
